Wednesday season 2 proves it was worth waiting for the return of Netflix’s hit series. The show’s sophomore season, which has been split into two parts, does a lot more following season 1’s ending, with Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) having a lot on her plate.
Successfully solving multiple mysteries during her last term at Nevermore, the character returns for a brand-new adventure, which holds just as many secrets. While I was a fan of Tyler (Hunter Doohan) and his relationship with Wednesday, I understand why the romance was divisive.
Wednesday season 2 does away with it, focusing its energy on other things. However, there is still room for romance and a love triangle for another character. Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers) continues to be a breath of fresh air, though her dynamic with Wednesday takes a hit in the early part of season 2.
Wednesday’s Family Is Here To Stay
One of Wednesday season 2’s biggest changes is the sizable roles of The Addams Family characters. While Morticia Adams (Catherine Zeta-Jones), Gomez Addams (Luis Guzmán), and Pugsley Addams (Isaac Ordonez) were all present in season 1, they now have a more active role in the story. This works wonders for the show, as their dynamic is refreshing.
Wednesday has a unique bond with each member of her family. That keeps the door open for the show to take interesting swings whenever one of the characters comes up. As was the case in season 1, Wednesday’s relationship with her mother, Morticia, is the key dynamic in the family, directly impacting many of the moves Ortega’s character makes.
Zeta-Jones makes the most out of her expanded role. Morticia might be infuriating at times in Wednesday’s eyes, but the actress plays it in a way that it is easy to see how there is a vulnerable side to this “authoritarian” mother who only wants what is best for her daughter.
Wednesday and her brother are very different characters, with her hard exterior contrasting with Pugsley’s search for connection.
Guzmán’s turn as Gomez continues to add humor to the show. His warmth is palpable every time he interacts with his family, which makes their bond feel endearing. As for Pugsley, it is nice seeing Nevermore through his eyes. Wednesday and her brother are very different people, with her hard exterior contrasting with Pugsley’s search for connection.
Enid Sinclair Needs More To Do
While Wednesday’s family gets a bigger role in season 2, I was a little disappointed the show didn’t do as much with her connection to Enid. After they became best friends in season 1, the two characters are not together nearly as much as before.
Their contrasting personalities played a key role in season 1 being such a huge success, and I hope their relationship is given more of a spotlight in Part 2. That said, Enid is still crucial to the overall story of Wednesday season 2, and Myers’ charisma shines every time the character is onscreen.
Steve Buscemi’s Principal Dort is a fun addition to the show, with the character alternating between lighter and darker moments effectively. Other actors, such as Thandiwe Newton, Christopher Lloyd, and Haley Joel Osment, add flair to the irreverent horror series.
Nevermore Academy Remains As Exciting As Always
Returning to Nevermore also looks as great as ever. Wednesday has gorgeous visual effects and cinematography that help build this atmospheric, dark world of Outcasts. It’s easy to be transported into the world of Wednesday, and it’s as if no time has passed at all since the end of season 1.
While Nevermore is no longer an unknown place, Wednesday continues to unravel new conspiracies and traditions we didn’t know about. As such, there are plenty of twists and turns in season 2’s first batch of episodes (four of the eight-episode season). Mystery-wise, the show offers the same kind of thrills that made season 1 so watchable.
Wednesday‘s stalker was perfectly set up in season 1, and season 2 satisfyingly resolves that storyline, with an even creepier new mystery taking its place. After finishing episode 4, I immediately wanted to learn what would happen in Part 2, which will have to deal with a major cliffhanger and a lot of blood spilled.
