Warning: Contains Spoilers for Secret Six #6 (2025)!
Superman Jon Kent is officially single. While the end of his relationship with Jay “Gossamer” Nakamura is heartbreaking, most fans likely saw it coming, as the couple had been going through exceptionally hard times. Still, this breakup might actually mark the beginning of a new romance for Jon, one that could become his best yet.
Nicole Maines and Stephen Segovia’s Secret Six mini-series comes to an explosive close in issue #6, with the Six at each other’s throats as they battle both internal conflict and outside forces.
After the shocking revelation in issue #5 that the U.S. government sanctioned Amanda Waller’s attack on Jay’s home, Gamorra, readers now witness the fallout, most notably, the end of the Jon and Jay relationship. And while many will mourn this heartbreaking split, it also opens the door for a possible Nia “Dreamer” Nal and Jon Kent romance.
How Amanda Waller’s War on Heroes Led to Jon and Jay’s Breakup
From Brainwashing to Betrayal: The Events That Tore Them Apart
For those unfamiliar with Jon and Jay’s romance in recent comics, you may have missed the catastrophic events of Mark Waid’s Absolute Power crisis. In it, Amanda Waller tried to eliminate superheroes once and for all by stealing their powers, unjustly imprisoning them, and manipulating public opinion to turn society against them.
Her plans included blackmailing Dreamer by threatening her family, brainwashing Jon into becoming a cybernetic threat, and bringing devastation to Gamorra, resulting in the death of Jay’s mother. These events created immense emotional strain, ultimately contributing to the steady breakdown of Jon and Jay’s relationship.
Jon’s continued friendship with Nia has only fueled the tension, as Jay blames her for his mother’s death due to her involvement in Waller’s plans. Readers have watched this rift grow in Secret Six, culminating in issue #6 when Jay, unable to move past the trauma, breaks up with Jon.
Jay Demands Justice for Gamorra, but Jon Refuses to Join His War
Jon & Jay’s Relationship Ends in Secret Six #6 After a Heartbreaking Ultimatum
Secret Six #6 shows Jay reeling from the revelation that the U.S. government sanctioned Waller’s devastating attack on Gamorra. Overcome with anger, Jay lashes out at Nia for her involvement, despite her defection from Waller before the attack that claimed his mother’s life. His grief and rage boil over, creating deep tension between the three former allies.
Jon steps in to stop the fight between Jay and Nia. Jay then informs Jon of the government’s role in the destruction of his home and family, revealing his desire for vengeance. He essentially asks Jon to help him overthrow the U.S. government. Jon, understandably hesitant about going that far, expresses concern and reluctance to take part in Jay’s plan.
Furious over Jon’s refusal, Jay walks away and delivers a final blow: “You really aren’t who I thought [you were]. Goodbye, Superman. I don’t believe in you anymore.” With those words, Jay disappears, leaving Jon heartbroken. His visible tears and internal monologue make it painfully clear that this breakup has shattered him.
Jon Kent’s Breakup May Lead to a New DC Romance With Dreamer
Secret Six & Absolute Power Build a Strong Case for a Jon and Nia Romance
While Secret Six #6 may mark the end of Jon and Jay’s romance, it also sets the stage for a potential new beginning with Nia. DC has carefully built their growing connection across Absolute Power, Absolute Power: Super Son, and Secret Six, showcasing a closeness that fans can’t help but notice, especially as Jon finds himself more isolated than ever.
Absolute Power: Super Son especially highlights how Nia and Jon bonded through shared trauma. Both had their lives disrupted by Amanda Waller, and it was Dreamer who ultimately saved Jon from her control and helped him return to himself. This moment not only solidified their friendship but also created a deep emotional link that continues to resonate.
Though their connection has remained firmly in the realm of friendship so far, the emotional groundwork hints at much more. Should DC choose to evolve this bond into romance, fans would likely embrace it wholeheartedly. With their strong foundation and mutual understanding, a relationship between Jon and Nia could easily become one of his most meaningful yet.
Secret Six’s End Isn’t the End for Jon and Nia’s Story
Superman Unlimited and Justice League Unlimited Set to Continue Their Journey
With Maines’s excellent Secret Six series coming to an end, some fans may doubt DC’s plans to continue Jon and Nia’s story. However, the last page of issue #6 offers hope, ending with “The end. For now,” hinting that their narrative is far from over.
The closing note also points to the Secret Six narrative continuing in upcoming stories in Superman Unlimited and Justice League Unlimited. While this likely refers to the broader plot continuing, fans can likely expect plenty of Jon and Nia interactions in these titles as well.
Dan Slott’s Superman Unlimited offers the greatest chance for Jon and Nia’s relationship to develop. As a Super-Family-focused series featuring Jon prominently, it’s the perfect place for their romance to grow. Fans should watch closely. This could be the next big Superman love story.
