Maleficent’s Quest for Power Explored in New Disney Comic Series

Disney has been creating memorable villains for the better part of a century, but few stand out quite like the dramatic sorceress, Maleficent. Now, the shapeshifting villainess will star in her own Dynamite Entertainment series. Fans can follow Maleficent on a new quest for power, set just after Aurora’s sleeping curse activates.

Writer Paulina Ganucheau and artist Theo Stultz are the latest duo to bring Maleficent to life in their stunning Disney Villains: Maleficent #1 story from Dynamite Entertainment. Set to be released this October, it will be a completely new adventure for the beloved Disney villain, albeit one with familiar themes of magic.

The Mistress of Evil, with her billowing cloak and dark magic, has never struggled to make an impression. Ganucheau’s tale promises to lean into the mystical, medieval aspects of the sorceress that help make her so memorable, all while giving both new and longtime fans fresh insight into Maleficent.

Maleficent’s New Comic Follows Her Search for Power

Fans recognize Maleficent as the dark fairy who cursed Sleeping Beauty to eternal sleep in retaliation for being slighted by the royal family. Her quest for revenge, combined with incredible magic, threatened to change the Kingdom forever. The spindle and sleeping curse are only one aspect of the villain’s life, however, and might not even be the most interesting one.

Disney Villains: Maleficent #1 is set to begin with Maleficent pursuing a new source of magic after her goblin horde returns with a grimoire brimming with mystical energy. To pursue it, the Mistress of Evil must leave her lair and undertake a perilous journey, all for the sake of power.

Along with a fully new story, the series comes complete with striking variant covers by Ellery Santos and Robert Quinn, and each showcases Maleficent with the perfect eerie, magical vibe. The series is worth checking out for the visuals alone, but this particular story will fill in new lore between Aurora’s curse and Sleeping Beauty’s end.

Sleeping Beauty Isn’t Maleficent’s Entire Story

While Maleficent will always be best known for her role as Sleeping Beauty’s antagonist, it’s clear there’s plenty to say about the character beyond her grudge against Aurora and her parents. Whether it’s the live-action retelling (with plenty of twists) starring Angelina Jolie or Dynamite’s original Maleficent series by author and artist Soo Lee, there’s always room for her to grow.

The upcoming Dynamite series places fans in both familiar yet unexplored territory, making it suitable for brand-new readers or those who followed and loved Soo Lee’s work with the Disney character. It’s still the same Maleficent who has been loved, feared, and adored for decades, but with a new perspective on just how far she’ll go for power.

Disney Villains: Maleficent #1 will be available in October 2025 from Dynamite Entertainment.
