Fans of Robert Rodriguez’s adaptation of Alita: Battle Angel will enjoy lead actress Rosa Salazar’s most underrated TV series, Undone. Alita: Battle Angel received mixed reviews after its release. While the film did a great job of bringing the manga to life through a CGI-crafted main character, a lot of key worldbuilding information was missing from the final product.
In 2023, Alita: Battle Angel’s producer, James Cameron, revealed that he was not only working on the sequel, but multiple Alita films (via Collider):
And on Avatar, I’m working in Wellington and Los Angeles. And on the new Alita: Battle Angel films, I’ll be working in Austin, so it just didn’t make sense for us (to live there) anymore.
21st Century Fox originally released the film, but thanks to Disney’s acquisition of the company back in 2019, Alita: Battle Angel’s well-deserved sequel may not be out of the picture just yet. In the meantime, fans of the female cyborg can dive into Rosa Salazar’s most underrated Prime Video sci-fi series.
Undone Is A Genre-Bending Animated Show Starring Alita’s Rosa Salazar
Undone made history upon its release in 2019 on Amazon Prime. Not only was it Amazon’s first-ever adult animated series, but Undone was also their first series created through rotoscoping. This animation technique allows artists to trace directly over motion picture footage.
Undone also boasts a star-studded cast, which includes Rosa Salazar, Bob Odenkirk, Constance Marie, Angelique Cabral, and Daveed Diggs. The show explores the elastic relationship between its lead character, Alma, and time, after she narrowly avoids death in a recent car accident.
Undone wasn’t only the first show to introduce a new animation technique to Amazon Prime, it is a revolutionary sci-fi series whose genre borders on drama, comedy, thriller, and mystery. It expands past what audiences usually expect of a sci-fi series and gives viewers a truly introspective experience. The series also holds an impressively high Rotten Tomatoes score of 97%.
Undone Is One Of The Most Underrated Shows On Prime Video
Like Alita: Battle Angel, Undone is another one of Rose Salazar’s most underrated projects. The series hasn’t made a return to the spotlight since its initial release in 2019. However, Undone was nominated for multiple awards, including the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Animated Series in 2023 for its second season. The same year, it took home the WGA award for its episode, “Rectify.”
Based on Yukito Kishiro’s original manga series, Alita: Battle Angel, known in Japan as Gunnm, explores the nature of humanity as well as societal divide, much like Salazar’s Amazon Prime series Undone. While Undone covers a different part of the sci-fi genre, it too dives into the complex topics of human suffering, self-reflection, and dealing with past trauma.
Alita: Battle Angel’s sequel has been confirmed by James Cameron. Although considering his commitment to finishing the current Avatar storyline, it might be a while before Alita’s story returns to the big screen. While audiences await Disney’s adaptation of Kishiro’s manga series, Undone is a highly-rated, perfectly bingeable sci-fi series starring the Battle Angel herself, Rosa Salazar.
