Summer is winding down, which means the season of spooky games is almost ready to start back up again. While there are plenty of hot new indie games to check out before Halloween, there’s one classic indie horror game that deserves more playtime. Phasmophobia, the ghost-hunting game created by Kinetic Games in 2020, is the perfect game to check back into, especially since it’s getting a new update soon.
It might be a better time than ever to get back into Phasmophobia, as the indie ghost-hunting game is getting a massive map update, alongside a movie adaptation by none other than Blumhouse Studios, the same company behind movies like Five Nights at Freddy’s and M3GAN.
Phasmophobia Is Getting More Content
A Whole New Map Is Coming Soon
Phasmophobia has been steadily receiving updates since its release in 2020, and the next few updates will both add content to the game and refine existing elements. The most exciting part of Phasmophobia’s next update is the new map: Nell’s Diner. Described in the developer’s note as a classic American diner, Nell’s Diner is a smaller map that should be ideal for smaller groups of players to enjoy short but intense games.
The diner sits on the side of an isolated highway and features a wide range of unique rooms, including eleven possible ghost rooms. The rooms range from cluttered dining rooms and brightly lit serving areas to rundown kitchens and eerie hallways, and are full of places to loop and cower from spirits.
There’s no release date set for Nell’s Diner yet, but the developers have promised a narrative inside the diner, which players can piece together for themselves, as “food still sits warm and tables are cluttered with plates and cutlery”. Alongside Nell’s Diner is an updated Grafton Farmhouse, which is launching on August 12, 2025. Changes include a new attic area, new interactions, and some environmental storytelling, as the map is “now home to the aftermath of something truly harrowing”.
Everyone’s Heard Of Phasmophobia, But More People Should Be Playing It
The 2020 Horror Game Is A Co-op Classic
Phasmophobia is one of the rare indie horror games that has kept up consistent updates and support in the five years since its release and explosive success. While the game became massively popular among streamers around October 2020, it has never since reached the same peak of players. Every October, in the lead up to Halloween, it sees a substantial spike in the playerbase, but the game deserves more attention.
With the new updates coming later this year, alongside the movie adaptation by Blumhouse, Phasmophobia is expected to gain popularity once again. Since this is a game best played with friends, now is the best time to get a group together to dive back into this indie classic and get to work hunting down stray spirits.
