A compelling theory in Dexter: Resurrection season 1 suggests that the true identity of the New York Ripper serial killer is a forgotten yet potentially crucial character from the original Dexter series.
Throughout Dexter: Resurrection season 1, the New York Ripper has been spoken of by both Peter Dinklage’s Leon Prater and NYPD homicide detective Claudette Wallace (played by Kadia Saraf). However, the Ripper’s identity has remained a mystery and he or she is not a part of Prater’s serial killer society, even though Prater has likely gone to great lengths to acquire the murder victim.
Interestingly, Det. Wallace is equally obsessed with the New York Ripper as Prater is, for very different reasons. While Prater would do anything to invite the Ripper into his elite club, Wallace could do anything to put him behind bars, since his case is the biggest unsolved one of her career that continues to haunt her.
Jonah Mitchell Is The New York Ripper – Dexter: Resurrection Theory Explained
The notion of the New York Ripper is first introduced in Dexter: Resurrection episode 4, when Prater shows Dexter one of the Ripper’s murder weapons that he has on display in his twisted museum of serial killer artifacts. It’s a manhole cover lifting hook with a handle on one end and a sharp hook on the other.
Back in Dexter season 6, episode 7, “Nebraska”, Dexter confronted Jonah Mitchell, the son of Arthur Mitchell, best known as The Trinity Killer. Dexter was at Jonah’s house when Jonah threatened him and told him to get out. Dexter then revealed to Jonah in a tense moment that he had killed Jonah’s dad.
Previously, in the same Dexter season 6 episode, Dexter spotted Jonah working in a hardware store swinging a large hook in front of a customer. Dexter discovers that Jonah killed his mother, Sally Mitchell, in a fit of rage after blaming him and his sister, Rebecca, for Arthur’s murderous actions. Sally abused Rebecca to the point of suicide, which is why Jonah killed Sally.
Jonah was guilt-ridden by his actions and had begged Dexter to kill him. Dexter surprisingly couldn’t bring himself to do it, however, thinking of Harrison and how Jonah was a victim of his father’s sins. Because Jonah is still alive in the Dexter universe, and the New York Ripper’s weapon is eerily similar to Jonah’s hook from season 6, these clues could suggest that Jonah is the prolific serial killer.
Jonah Being The New York Ripper Would Fit With A Major Dexter: Resurrection Theme
If Jonah Mitchell does turn out to be the New York Ripper, it would capitalize on a Dexter franchise theme about fathers and sons. It would fit with the overall story to see the son of Trinity actually become a prolific serial killer, while Dexter’s son was able to avoid that path so far.
If Harrison continues on his path towards living a normal life, then Jonah Mitchell’s New York Ripper could become the serial killer protégé that Dexter was hoping for with his own son. That said, Jonah may still have hard feelings about Dexter killing his father, even though Dexter spared his life all those years ago.
A fascinating development in Dexter: Resurrection season 1 would be if Prater somehow got in contact with the N.Y. Ripper and invited him into his exclusive yet dwindling club. This could be the most natural way to introduce his character in Resurrection and would also make it possible for Detective Wallace to finally crack his case.
Having Jonah turn out to be a serial killer would also add emphasis to Dexter’s increased motivation to become more of a parental presence in Harrison’s adult life. Jonah could have realistically unraveled and gone completely astray after losing his entire immediate family. This is something that Dexter wanted to avoid for Harrison, who was haunted by killing his father before he and Dexter reunited.
Jonah Being The New York Ripper Would Help Set Up Dexter’s Trinity Killer Spinoff
Another great aspect of having Jonah return to the Dexter franchise would be that it would help contextualize the anticipated Trinity Killer spinoff series, which has been in development for quite some time. Jonah’s return would help set up the prequel by drawing parallels to Jonah and Arthur’s story and help build more intrigue about how Trinity became a killer.
The Dexter series is largely fascinated with how serial killers come to be. For Dexter, who was infamously born in blood, his Dark Passenger was sourced in the shipping container where his mother died. Fortunately for him, Harry’s code made him an agent of justice, while his brother Brian, who was also born in blood, was left to his own devices without proper guidance.
Additionally, if Jonah is revealed to be the New York Ripper by the end of Dexter: Resurrection season 1, then he would have to play a significant role in Dexter: Resurrection season 2. It would be wildly compelling to watch Dexter try to guide both Harrison and Jonah in very opposite ways, helping Harrison be a normal person while instilling Harry’s Code into Jonah.
