There’s an easy solution for The Night Agent season 2’s most divisive aspect. Despite achieving mass popularity and critical acclaim for its first season, the Netflix action thriller adaptation received mixed responses for its sophomore run. Audiences turned on The Night Agent, and there are reasons as to why.
While waiting for The Night Agent season 3, now is the time to contemplate the show’s future. The show will likely return in early 2026, and has already wrapped filming and entered post-production.
Rose’s Story Was Criticized In The Night Agent Season 2
Despite being integral to The Night Agent season 1, actress Luciane Buchanan received a lot of flak for her character’s arc in season 2. It made sense for her to have an active role in the first season, given her family connection and that she was on the run with Peter Sutherland. She was out of her depth but managed to put her skills to effective use.
In season 2, when the stakes are tremendously high with a terrorist threat on New York City that could destroy the UN Building, it’s a bit more bizarre that an untrained computer wiz is working to prevent it. Rose is incredibly smart, but she has no business being involved with this narrative.
Perhaps the biggest point of critique for Rose in season 2 wasn’t even that she shouldn’t have been there, but that she couldn’t decide whether she wanted to. It seemed like her motivation flip-flopped every episode, with her threatening to leave in one and demanding to be included in the next.
Luciane Buchanan Is Fantastic In Apple TV+’s New Series, Chief Of War
Let’s make one thing clear: Luciane Buchanan is not at fault for her character’s story. On the Apple TV+ series Chief of War, she’s proving that she’s a talented actress and a worthy leading woman. The show is excellent altogether, and she’s a critical part of its success.
While it’s easy to blame an actor for a dissatisfying character, it’s worth mentioning that The Night Agent season 2 had rough edges all around. Buchanan was excellent in season 1, and there are ways to get back to what made Rose Larkin a critical element in the TV series to begin with.
Rose’s Arc Just Needs Better Planning In The Night Agent
Now that I’ve seen Luciane Buchanan in Chief of War and know how good she can be with better writing, I’m hoping she won’t be written off from The Night Agent. She’s currently not confirmed for season 3, which has already wrapped filming, but that doesn’t mean she couldn’t return in a guest role before reemerging in season 4.
The issue with Rose in season 2 was that she felt adjacent to Peter and didn’t have a planned arc of her own. She was integral to season 1’s success, but they lacked a coherent plan for her future. The Night Agent’s future seasons need to provide her with worthy material to bounce back.
