Jurassic World Rebirth Box Office Disappoints Despite $800M Haul

The Jurassic Park franchise is known for being box office gold, but 2025’s Jurassic World Rebirth is set to fall short of the series’ commercial expectations. From the very beginning when Steven Spielberg launched this property, the Jurassic movies have been consistently strong box office performers. Universal hoped to achieve the same success with its latest installment.

Building off of the previous trilogy, Jurassic World Rebirth is the start of a new Jurassic saga, with it focusing on an all-new cast of characters led by some major stars. Looking at the raw numbers and ranking of the film in the 2025 box office charts, there’s no doubt that Jurassic World Rebirth is one of the year’s biggest movies.

It’s comfortably moved into the top five at the worldwide box office, currently sitting in fourth place behind A Minecraft Movie ($955 million) and ahead of How To Train Your Dragon ($623 million). The movie’s current $800 million gross is massively impressive and a big win for Universal. Yet, this dinosaur franchise had greater expectations.

Jurassic World Rebirth’s Box Office Will Finish Below The Franchise’s Average Total

The Jurassic franchise’s box office performance throughout its history has been stellar, with the franchise having an average total of $1,004,956,563 across the six previous films. So, heading into Jurassic World Rebirth, it was somewhat expected that it would make over $1 billion to stay above the franchise average. Unfortunately, it probably won’t be doing that.

Jurassic World Rebirth has crossed the $800 million mark, and while this is impressive, it is well shy of that average. It is doubtful that the film will make another $200 million before its theatrical run is over. We are now over a month out from its July 2 release, and it is already available for purchase on digital marketplaces.

That’s surely a surprise for Universal. The previous three Jurassic World movies all made over $1 billion, despite two of the three having worse reviews than Rebirth, so the branding is strong. Furthermore, the new film boasts the highest-grossing box office star ever, Scarlett Johansson, as the new lead.

Jurassic Movie

Worldwide Box Office

Jurassic Park (1993)

$1,058,454,230

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

$618,638,999

Jurassic Park III (2001)

$368,780,809

Jurassic World (2015)

$1,671,537,444

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)

$1,308,323,302

Jurassic World Dominion (2022)

$1,004,004,592

Jurassic World Rebirth (2025)

$800,368,830

The 2025 film is still a box office success, as its $800 million return is much higher than its reported $225 million budget. However, its relative underperformance for this franchise is interesting, and it can mostly be attributed to two major factors.

Firstly, Jurassic World Rebirth is the start of a new series within the Jurassic franchise. Unlike Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom or Jurassic World Dominion, Rebirth doesn’t have the benefit of a continued story or returning characters. Rebirth is asking viewers to buy into a new saga, and after the disappointing conclusion to the previous trilogy, some audience members may not have come back.

Secondly, Rebirth had a lot of competition. Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps were both released in the weeks following Rebirth, with all three of these blockbusters targeting similar audiences. These three films made for an incredibly crowded summer, and the later releases of the two superhero films hurt Rebirth‘s legs.

The film’s $800 million box office is still impressive, proving that the franchise can be a hit even without Chris Pratt in the leading role. However, Jurassic World Rebirth proves that the franchise is still among Hollywood’s elite, but it has lost some steam.
