Henry Cavill’s Villainous Turn In Mission: Impossible

Henry Cavill delivered one of his best performances in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, but it doesn’t seem like he’s going to repeat this particular success any time soon. Cavill plays August Walker in Fallout, joining Tom Cruise and several other recurring stars in the franchise. Unfortunately, this was Cavill’s only Mission: Impossible movie.

Fallout is arguably the best Mission: Impossible movie of all, somehow improving upon Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation with even more unbelievable stunts, thrilling action sequences and a finely crafted plot. Cavill’s performance is also a key factor. He works well alongside Cruise, first as one of Ethan Hunt’s allies and later as a villain.

Henry Cavill Should Consider More Villain Roles After Mission: Impossible

August Walker is one of the Mission: Impossible franchise’s best villains, which suggests that Henry Cavill should take on more roles as the bad guy in the future. Although he’s first introduced as someone for Ethan Hunt to work alongside, August eventually reveals his true colors. This twist works especially well considering how rare it is to see Cavill playing a villain.

Most of Henry Cavill’s best movies see him playing brave heroes, but he adapts to the role of a villain like a natural. He brings a lot of intensity and unnerving menace to the role, which makes August’s climactic final showdown with Ethan even more nerve-wracking. Cavill snaps into a terrifyingly unhinged state after the big villain twist, and it works brilliantly.

Although it will be hard for another movie to replicate the shock of seeing Cavill suddenly putting on a more villainous guise, it would still be an interesting step for him to decide to play more antagonists. He clearly has what it takes, and it could make for a refreshing change from his long list of heroes.

Henry Cavill Probably Won’t Be Playing A Villain Any Time Soon

It could be a long time before Henry Cavill considers another villain role like Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Cavill’s upcoming projects show that he has a lot on his plate already, and he’s set to play more protagonists in movies like his Highlander reboot, a Voltron movie and his mysterious Warhammer project.

Even when Cavill does free up some time, it’s unlikely that he’ll be rushing back into playing a villain. He’s firmly established himself as a leading man in Hollywood, and it’s rare for these types of actors to decide to play second fiddle too often. He may do it for Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible, but this seems to be the exception rather than the rule.
