What Time Squid Game Season 3 Releases On Netflix

Squid Game season 3 will walk through the final arc of the hit Netflix Korean show, revealing the fates of season 2’s beloved characters and the end of Gi-hun’s journey to find revenge and redemption. Before Squid Game season 1 landed on Netflix in September 2021, there wasn’t a lot of buzz surrounding the series. Even Netflix did not go out of its way to promote the show as one of its biggest future IPs. Yet, merely through word-of-mouth, the show rose in the ranks to become one of the most commercially successful shows on the streaming service.

From a critical standpoint, Squid Game season 2 was slightly less acclaimed than its predecessor. In terms of overall viewership, however, the second installment of the Netflix Korean show continued the series’ momentum and proved that the four-year gap between seasons 1 and 2 barely had an impact on audience interest surrounding the series. Almost six months after Squid Game season 2’s release, season 3 is set to premiere on Netflix and finally resolve all loose ends in its story for good. Given the hype surrounding its release, many would want to know its precise release time.

Why Squid Game Season 3 Is Releasing Only Six Months After Season 2

Squid Game Seasons 2 And 3 Were Written & Filmed Back-To-Back

Since it took Squid Game season 2 almost four years to release after the show’s opening season, many viewers would be wondering how season 3 is coming out so soon. Interestingly, as many reports have confirmed, Squid Game seasons 2 and 3 were filmed back-to-back. When Squid Game‘s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, first created the show, he never thought it would become such a viral phenomenon. Owing to this, he did not know what the show’s future would look like before it started streaming on Netflix.

Squid Game centers around a series of innocent childhood games turned dark. Here’s the origin of each game in order, and their deeper meanings.

When he was given the opportunity to expand the series’ lore with another season, he did not decline the offer. However, as the show’s creator, he had initially envisioned “seasons 2 and 3 as a single story(via EW). While writing the second installment, though, he noticed that “it came out to be too many episodes.” As a result, instead of ending the show’s run with the second installment, Dong-hyuk decided to split it into two parts, which seems to explain why Squid Game season 2’s ending seems a little abrupt and arguably unsatisfying.

In another interview (via Deadline), the showrunner further explained his decision to divide season 2 into two parts by revealing that he noticed “a big turning point or an inflection point” at the end of season 2’s episode 7. This made him realize it would be fair to finish one season’s story arc at that natural break and continue the rest with another installment. Even though Squid Game season 2’s slightly abrupt conclusion was controversial, Hwang Dong-hyuk’s statements clear the air on why the show had to end where it did before making the inception of its final chapter.
