The following contains spoilers for Nobody 2Nobody 2‘s ending reaffirms Hutch’s place in the world, all while setting the stage for more potential sequels. The sequel to 2021’s sleeper action hit, Nobody 2 brings back Bob Odernkirk’s Hutch. A seemingly mild-mannered suburban family man is secretly a deadly agent, whose darker side resurfaces. The action-packed and self-aware Nobody 2 picks up some time after the first film, with Hutch forced to become an “auditor” for the government again. His attempt to unwind with his family goes awry when their summer vacation stumbles upon a dangerous smuggling ring.

Nobody 2‘s characters lean into the stylistic elements of the action film, especially Sharon Stone’s criminal mastermind Lendina. By the end of the film, Hutch has been forced to dispatch her entire operation (with his wife Becca and father David delivering the final blows that kill Lendina). The open-ended nature of the film’s final moments suggests that Hutch could be back in the field in no time. Here are the ways Nobody 2 quietly sets up another sequel.

Who Sets Hutch & Becca Free In The End?

Hutch and Becca are let loose from police custody at the end of Nobody 2 because of Hutch’s connections, setting the stage for him to return in another sequel. Nobody established Hutch as a retired “auditor” for the United States Intelligence Community, who found himself spurred back into action despite his efforts to retire.

As a result of his actions in Nobody‘s ending, the government covered the debt Hutch accrued with the Russian mafia after he destroyed a small fortune of their cash. Hutch is forced to pay them back by going on deadly missions, steadily working his way through his debt even as he feels himself burning out and losing touch with his family.

Although the exact person who orders Hutch and Becca to be freed by the end of Nobody 2 isn’t confirmed, they’re likely connected to the Barber. Hutch’s government handler, the Barber appeared in the film’s first act and later gave Hutch a certain amount of information about Plumerville — but couldn’t provide back-up.

It’s likely that the Barber is simply ensuring one of his top agents escapes police scrutiny, preventing any potential blowback on his end if Hutch is exposed. This could give the Barber more leverage over Hutch. There’s also a question about Becca’s full origins and her history with Hutch, with her freedom potentially coming with some caveats as well.

How The Ending Sets Up Nobody 3

Nobody 2 is largely focused on Hutch and his efforts to actually take a break from his brutal line of work. Most of the film is self-contained, with Hutch openly told that he won’t receive any help from the government in dealing with Lendina and her smuggling ring based out of the small town. Luckily, by the end of the film, he’s wiped out her entire operation.

While Hutch and Becca escape the climax in one piece, there are some elements in the film that hint at potential sequel directions. The most pressing matter remains the debt that Hutch owes the Barber and the United States government, which requires several more missions before his slate is cleaned.

Hutch’s role as an “auditor” is a perfectly open-ended role, with prospective sequels giving Hutch all sorts of possible missions to take on. Nobody 2 also codified the bond between Hutch and his family, with Harry and David getting actively involved in the fight. A sequel could revisit those relationships and show more of them in action together.

There’s also another hint that David raised Harry and Hutch by taking them along on missions (such as their previous time in Plumerville), which hints at a deeper lore for the character and his place in the intelligence community. A sequel could explore more about David’s role as a retired agent and could highlight his own drive to make sure his sons became better men than him.

A sequel to Nobody 2 could also continue to focus on the dynamic between Hutch and his family. Becca is clearly conflicted about their relationship, and a sequel could dive into their history together. Brady’s arc highlights his struggles to not duplicate his father’s violent streak, which could be more focused on in a prospective sequel that leans into the character dynamics.

The Real Meaning Of Nobody 2

Nobody 2 is a movie about the balance between work and family, a struggle that still feels grounded even when it involves international criminal syndicates and katana-wielding fighters. Hutch’s arc in Nobody 2 is rooted in his efforts to take a break not just from his work, but his violent impulses and vengeful fury.

This is Hutch’s true test in the film, as he admits to Becca that he can’t turn off the dangerous side of his personality. Despite his best efforts, righteous fury drives him to escalate conflicts that he knows will only make his life harder. He just can’t help himself from bringing his work self into home life, which only endangers his family.

The divide this creates between himself and his children, especially the impressionable Brady, underscores the emotional stakes of his arc. While Hutch is constantly in life and death struggles, he is most vulnerable when explaining himself to his wife or trying to convince his son that he wants Brady to become a better man than him.

The importance of those bonds and those lessons is codified in the finale when Becca comes to save him and Brady shows mercy against a mercenary, proving there’s hope for Hutch’s family yet. This arc is also reflected in David’s clear affection for his sons, as well as with the initially antagonistic Wyatt. He’s struggling to raise his son, and allies with Hutch after he saves him.

Nobody 2 has a lot of fun with the action genre, throwing Hutch into all sorts of massive brawls with unexpected weaponry. However, the emotional core of the film builds on the bonds that Hutch was willing to die for in the previous film. It gives Nobody 2 a sweet moral about the importance of family, amid all the creative bloodshed.
