Warning: Spoilers ahead for Resident Alien season 4, episode 10, “The End Is Here.”Resident Alien season 4, episode 10, “The End Is Here,” serves as an emotional farewell to the residents of Patience, Colorado, but forgets to let one of its original characters in on the show’s biggest secret. While Resident Alien‘s ending wraps up an impressive number of storylines in just 45 minutes, it fails to address at least one last potential twist.
By the end of the show, most of the Resident Alien cast are fully aware that Alan Tudyk’s Harry Vanderspeigle is an extraterrestrial. However, there’s still a key character who is still clueless about Harry’s origin and why he acts so strangely. While the character in question didn’t necessarily need to know, it’s still interesting that they never found out.
Jay Is The Only Main Character To End The Show Not Knowing That Aliens Exist
Kaylaya Raine’s Character Hasn’t Been Involved In Her Mother’s Alien Affairs
Asta Twelvetrees (Sara Tomko) is the first main character to learn that Harry is an alien. After her discovery in Resident Alien season 1, everyone else gradually learns the truth about Tudyk’s character, or finds out in their own way that aliens exist. The only character who doesn’t have this revelation by the time of the finale is Jay (Kaylayla Raine).
Asta’s daughter is never directly involved in any of the show’s alien-centric storylines. Instead, her arc is pretty much exclusively about building a relationship with her birth mother, making her an outlier among Patience’s core residents. On the other hand, there is an argument to suggest Judy (Jenna Lamia) is also unaware that aliens exist.
Judy can be seen arm-in-arm with Ethan (Michael Cassidy) in the final moments of “The End Is Here.” So, it stands to reason that Lamia’s character may now know that Ethan is an alien. Of course, it’s also likely that Judy’s ditzy nature means she thinks her new best friend is just the original Ethan, who was human.
Why It Makes Sense That Jay Doesn’t Know About Aliens In The Finale
Asta Has Been Quietly Keeping Her Daughter Safe
As I’ve already mentioned, Jay’s storyline has only ever crossed over in any meaningful way with Asta’s, as the pair slowly become closer as mother and daughter. Asta’s involvement with alien affairs has, on more than one occasion, put her in immense danger. So, it makes sense that Tomko’s character would want to keep Jay out of harm’s way.
If Asta had told Jay that aliens exist, she may have wanted to know more or even become actively involved in her mother’s extraterrestrial endeavors. Knowing this, Asta probably made the conscious decision to never tell her daughter, to keep her safe.
Plus, their dynamic has always been a little delicate, as Jay was upset by Asta not revealing herself as her mother sooner than she did. So, at a certain point, Asta had known about aliens for too long without telling Jay, which her daughter would probably be upset by, and any bridges they’d built would risk annihilation.
Jay Will Probably Find Out About Aliens Sooner Or Later
Asta’s Absence From Patience Means Jay Is More Likely To Discover The Truth
Even though Harry is gone by the end of Resident Alien, Patience still has Ethan living among the human townsfolk. So, although Jay is headed off to college in Boulder, she will likely be back now and then for the holidays and to visit everyone. When she does, she’ll be returning to a town where knowledge of alien life is pretty commonplace.
Also, everyone who knows about aliens now openly discusses the subject. With Asta also no longer in Patience by the end of the show, there’ll be no one to shield Jay from the knowledge Asta’s protected her from for so long. Therefore, even though it might happen offscreen, Raine’s Resident Alien character is unlikely to remain in the dark forever.
