Spoilers for All-New Venom #9! Marvel’s Lethal Protector, Venom, possesses multiple symbiote powers that enable the character to perform incredible yet horrifying feats. In the latest issue of All-New Venom, Venom has unleashed a brand-new ability that may be one of the character’s scariest skills yet.
Recently revealed as the mysterious new host of Venom, Mary Jane Watson’s version of the character has the same skillset as her predecessors, with one big exception. As seen in All-New Venom #9, Venom can now manifest a chest-bursting symbiote head, a new power that’s as deadly as it is terrifying.
Venom’s New Chestburster Symbiote Power Is Terrifying but Effective
All-New Venom #9 by Al Ewing and Carlos Gómez
A comic that follows Mary Jane’s Venom after getting caught up in a fight with Doctor Octopus, it isn’t long before this iconic Spider-Man villain gains the upper hand. Stringing up Venom, Rick Jones’ Sleeper, and Flash Thompson’s Agent Anti-Venom with his patented tentacles, it’s here where Venom utilizes a never-before-seen symbiote attack.
Turning the tables on their captor by unleashing a symbiote head from the large spider logo on their chest, Venom’s gooey golden tendril takes Doc Ock, as well as readers, off guard. Seizing the opportunity, Venom proceeds to choke Doc Ock out by shoving this writhing golden symbiote down his throat.
Looking like a cross between one of Venom’s all-black tendrils mixed with a near exact replica of Venom’s head, Venom’s golden appendage seems like it has a mind of its own. Finishing Venom’s iconic “We are Venom!” line before leaping at Doc Ock, it’s interesting to see the autonomy afforded to this little guy.
A scene that feels like it was ripped right out of a sci-fi horror flick, Venom’s new chestburst attack is not only a powerful move on its own, but one that’s scary enough to be a deterrent in a fight should Venom decide to threaten his foes with it rather than attack.
Venom’s New Chestbursting Power Takes Cues From the Movie Alien
Venom’s Chestburster Even Looks Similar
What’s most impressive about this new power is not just that it successfully gives Venom yet another offensive technique that would make any enemy turn and run in the other direction, but also that it pays homage to one of the greatest sci-fi horror films of all time: Alien.
Having more killing power than most Marvel heroes and villains combined, Venom has clearly taken notes on one of Alien’s most iconic scenes where a doomed Kane is killed via chestburster. Looking similar to that alien with its small head, wide mouth, and protruding tongue, Venom harnesses the chestburster’s terrifying energy in a way that works for the character.
And while this is a much less bloody and violent version of Alien‘s chestburster scene, this may also mark the moment where Mary Jane starts to unlock even more new abilities capable of scaring the daylights out of her foes. A golden multi-headed symbiote tendril, perhaps?
Mary Jane’s Venom is still new at this whole symbiote superhero thing, so there’s no telling what other powerful abilities are waiting in the wings for her the longer she stays bonded. Regardless, Venom’s latest attack is pure nightmare fuel, so fans should stay tuned to All-New Venom to see what other horrifying developments it will offer up next.
