Peter Parker’s Spider-Man has a new power that’s too grisly for the big-screen, and it’s tied for the most vicious thing he’s ever done. Even within the Marvel Universe, Spidey’s web have been hailed as the ultimate crime-fighting weapon – a way of incapacitating crooks that doesn’t risk hurting them, even decomposing within the hour to avoid unexpected consequences. Now, the Wall-Crawler is making a major change.
In a preview of Amazing Spider-Man #10 – from Joe Kelly, Michael Dowling, Marte Gracia, Erick Arciniega and Joe Caramagna – Peter takes on his new identity as ‘the Resolute Spider-Man.’ Along with a bone-breaking new mean streak, Spider-Man has upgraded his webbing, making it harder than steel and capable of impaling his victims like a spear.
Recently, Spider-Man was brutally beaten by the imposing villain known only as Hellgate. Since then, he’s been sporting fresh injuries and a cold-hearted attitude that sees him beating his foes like never before. Now, as well as putting his enemies in hospital, Spider-Man has upgraded his webbing to stab them from a distance.
Fans don’t yet know what’s behind Peter’s bad attitude, with one theory being that during the time jump since Hellgate, he’s been replaced by his clone Ben Reilly. Whatever the answer, this “Resolute” Spider-Man is showing no mercy, even against D-list threats like the Shocker.
Spider-Man Has Only Gone THIS Dark Once Before
In the preview, Peter faces down New York’s mob kingpin Tombstone, worrying ally and lover the Black Cat. And Felicia should be worried, as it’s hugely out of character for Spider-Man to turn his webbing into such a visceral weapon. The only thing that comes close is the move that’s become known as the Mark of Kaine, where Spidey uses his adhesive fingers to latch onto a person’s skin, pulling it off with one superstrength yank.
However, while Spider-Man has only ever used the Mark of Kaine when his worst enemies have pushed him beyond all limits, it seems that his new spear-webbing made its debut against the Shocker and his henchmen – a threat that really shouldn’t require Spider-Man to send anyone to hospital, let alone put them in a coma.
Spider-Man’s webbing is his most versatile and unique tool – a result of his genius as an inventor that’s as useful for saving lives as it is for restraining threats like the Green Goblin and Doc Ock. However, with the loss of Peter’s hope, Spider-Man’s webbing is now more weapon than gadget – able to impale his victims like a projectile stinger.
Whatever the reason, Spider-Man has lost his humanity after his beating from Hellgate, leaving a very different hero stalking New York’s streets. What this means for Peter’s allies and enemies is still to be revealed, but if his face-off with Tombstone is anything to go by, Spider-Man‘s fearless new attitude will have major consequences in the months to come.
