When it comes to the overarching tone, Amazon’s Butterfly is far less lighthearted than FUBAR. However, both shows seem to have a similar narrative core, given how they perfectly combine espionage with family drama. In both shows, a father-daughter duo live secret lives as highly trained operatives without knowing about the true nature of each other’s jobs.
The main female character in Butterfly, Rebecca, is also led to believe her father, David Jung, is dead before she learns the truth about his fake death. Both shows feature massive reveals in their opening arcs, where the parent-child duos find the truth about one another and are compelled to join forces for a shared mission.
Since the partnership forces the duo to confront all the underlying issues in their relationship, the espionage action in both shows is constantly layered with emotional, family-driven tension. However, the more they work together, the more they end up rebuilding their broken relationship.
Netflix’s FUBAR avoids taking itself too seriously, and its two main characters’ dynamic often leads to hilarious situations. Prime Video’s Butterfly, in contrast, is relatively more serious in tone but still a worthy replacement for the Netflix series.

Owing to this, it was renewed for season 2, which premiered on Netflix on June 12, 2025. Unfortunately, the show seemingly experienced a massive decline in viewership with the second installment.
