The Nintendo Switch is no stranger to the odd RPG and has even gotten some of the best of them across its lifetime. From third-party releases like The Witcher 3 to the very best first-party RPGs like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, the Switch’s RPG library may not rival that of its competitors, but it is coming very close. With the genre rising in popularity, the Switch and its successor are only likely to see more RPGs released for them, and that makes me very happy.
Fortunately, we’re already seeing this in motion, as one of the very best RPGs ever made, at least in my opinion, is finally heading to the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. This game may have been on your radar or flown straight under it, but either way, you absolutely have to check it out on the Nintendo Switch. It is a truly ambitious RPG, unlike anything that has come before it, and is deserving of all of our attention.
Caves Of Qud Has Been In Development For 15 Years
It Is A Truly Ambitious Roguelike RPG
Caves of Qud’s lengthy 15-year development is certainly headline-worthy, but also utterly warranted, as its ridiculous and audacious ambition shows on screen with every playthrough. This is a huge, fully simulated, living and breathing world in which you can do literally anything. At no point during any of my many, many, many playthroughs did I encounter something that didn’t let me interact with it in whatever way my imagination led me.
Caves of Qud’s detailed lore, intense character customization, huge world, 70+ factions, and so much more lend themselves to the ultimate and fully customizable RPG that is surprisingly approachable despite its rather complex depth. It is easily one of the best indie RPGs, if not the best, at least when it comes to scope and scale, and feels like the perfect RPG to play if you’re a huge fan of Baldur’s Gate 3. That’s also what makes its appearance on the Switch all the more appealing, as we’re still waiting for that BG3 port.
Caves Of Qud Is Finally Coming To Switch
It Is Launching In Q4 2025
Caves of Qud may just end up being the best Nintendo Switch RPG thanks to its unrestrictive and freeform nature. If you didn’t catch it when it released on Steam and launched into 1.0, then you will absolutely want to check it out when it releases on the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 in Q4 2025. Of course, those who are more akin to the Switch’s penchant for cozy games may be a little put off by Caves of Qud’s complex nature and overwhelming art style.
However, you absolutely get used to it, and the game does a good job of easing you into its enormous experience. That’s why it has garnered a 91 on Metacritic and an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam from over 10,000 reviews. Caves of Qud will make a fine addition to the Nintendo Switch’s library of RPGs, and a must-play for anyone looking to dedicate their life to one of the most impressive and immersive games ever made.
