Throughout its more than 25 years of history, the Digimon franchise has introduced a plethora of mysteries that have caused much confusion among fans. Despite how complex and well-written most of the best series have been, audiences have noticed various plot holes that were not resolved before Adventure came to an end.
One of the most intriguing is the sudden appearance of a digital being known as Homeostasis, who acted as an ally of the DigiDestined during the Adventure Tri film series. Despite its pivotal role in the movies, the entity was never properly introduced. Its origins were confined to a lesser-known manga and novels that most fans have not read.
Homeostasis Is One of Digimon’s Most Important and Mysterious Entities
When Yggdrasil, the supercomputer and deity of the Digital World, became obsessed with the idea of erasing humanity, a new player joined the game to protect the balance of the Digimon franchise. This mysterious being, named Homeostasis, appeared during the Digimon movie series released to celebrate the franchise’s anniversary, Adventure Tri.
Its intervention was vital in giving the heroes and the beloved original group of Digimon partners a fighting chance against the enraged deity. Yet, throughout the entire series, the sudden addition of Homeostasis was never explained. The character was seen as an opposing force to Yggdrasil’s destructive personality, but no further details were revealed.
The truth behind its creation and purpose was hidden in the manga version of the Digimon Fusion anime and the Adventure novels. According to this entry, Homeostasis was created by the true deities of the Digital World as a replacement for Yggdrasil, since its various heinous crimes were deemed too dangerous for both the Digital and human worlds.
Homeostasis Was Hidden Since the Franchise’s Beginning
While Homeostasis’ official anime debut occurred during the Tri movie series, its influence has always been a key part of the franchise. According to the Fusion manga, this entity was created to rule over the Digital World and the series’ strongest Digimon with kindness and compassion after Yggdrasil rebelled against its creators.
While not the same character as in the manga, the Adventure version of Homeostasis was hinted at playing a similar role. It was this advanced program that called upon the DigiDestined and helped them on their quest. The novels revealed that this force was the one possessing Kari during the original anime.
The entity would not reveal its name until the Tri film series, during which Yggdrasil once again attempted to destroy the human world. Unfortunately, due to the difficulty in acquiring the Fusion manga and Adventure novels outside of Japan, many fans would have never understood the purpose and origins of Homeostasis, despite its importance to the plot.
Yggdrasil’s Origins Are Also Quite Upsetting
Even though Homeostasis’ introduction to the Digimon anime franchise caused much confusion among fans, this is not the first time one of the amazing anime shows has done something similar. Yggdrasil’s first appearance in the franchise is also controversial for audiences, as it occurred without any warning or foreshadowing.
The supercomputer was first seen in the Data Squad anime, one of Digimon‘s best and most underrated series, once again looking to erase humanity from existence. Despite being made specifically for this show, the Digital World’s deity became a recurring villain for the franchise, although most other works did not include an origin story for the entity.
A large majority of the fandom was familiar with the character when it became a key player in the Digimon Adventure Tri series. Nonetheless, returning and new fans were quite confused about the sudden introduction of a god-like supercomputer. Lamentably, this has become a trend for the franchise, with important characters being introduced to the anime without explanation.
Following Digimon’s Story Has Become a Difficult Endeavor for Most
Despite being considered the gold standard for kids’ anime, the Digimon franchise has become outstandingly difficult to follow for most fans. Due to the ever-increasing amount of anime, manga, video games, and V-Pets that have been released over the years, the overall plot of the series has become oversaturated and too complex for the average follower.
On several occasions, characters and creatures have been added to an anime’s cast without a proper explanation of their origins or their purpose. One of the best examples of this trend comes from Ryo Akiyama, one of the strongest Digimon Tamers and a vital character for the story of this beloved and memorable franchise.
Despite his major role in the anime, his backstory was confined to a series of video games that not many fans played, making his inclusion feel random for many viewers. Digimon’s lore is deep and rich, a fact that a large portion of the fandom loves, but it can also be extremely challenging to follow at times.
