Fans of Elsbeth definitely need to check out another murder mystery, specifically one that has 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Elsbeth season 3 has already announced a star-studded guest star roster. Although the CBS show is a procedural, many of those names are comedians.
Stephen Colbert will be joining Elsbeth season 3 playing a fictional late-night host. This role is especially relevant given The Late Show With Stephen Colbert‘s recent cancellation. He’ll be joined by Amy Sedaris, who will play his head writer and executive producer. Conan O’Brien’s sidekick, Andy Richter, will also appear in the episode, this time playing Colbert’s right-hand man.
David Cross is also joining the Elsbeth cast, which proves that the show is leaning into its comedic elements. Elsbeth season 3 won’t return until October. However, luckily for fans, there’s another comedic crime show they can binge right now.
Only Murders In The Building Is A Comedy Murder Mystery
Elsbeth fans have to check out Hulu’s original series, Only Murders In The Building. Admittedly, Only Murders In The Building is more of a comedy than Elsbeth, having been nominated for an Emmy for best comedy every season. However, with Elsbeth casting so many comedians for season 3, there’s clearly a similarity between the two shows.
Of course, there are some big differences between the two mystery shows. Elsbeth focuses on a different murder each episode, with an over-arching non-murder story running throughout the season. Only Murders In The Building, on the other hand, follows one murder a season.
Elsbeth also stands out from other shows on the air right now, as it’s not a traditional “whodunnit,” but rather a “howcatchem.” The audience learns the killer at the beginning of each episode, then waits for Elsbeth and the police to put the pieces together. Only Murders In The Building is a traditional “whodunnit,” with the reveal coming in the season finale.
That all being said, fans of one will love the other. Both Elsbeth and Only Murders In The Building have laugh-out-loud funny moments, making them a welcome break from darker procedurals such as Law & Order or NCIS. Hopefully, more future shows will take a page from their playbook.
Only Murders In The Building Has A Star-Studded Cast
Elsbeth and Only Murders In The Building even share some famous guest stars, so fans will be delighted to see some familiar faces back on their TVs. For example, Keegan-Michael Key will appear in OMITB season 5, but Elsbeth fans will remember him as Ashton Hayes in season 1. Key isn’t the only cast crossover, though.
Both Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick have acted in Elsbeth and OMITB. For Elsbeth fans who specifically love the comedy and the guest stars, Only Murders In The Building is the perfect show to binge-watch. New viewers will love the mysteries and famous faces, as well as the jokes and drama.
