The latest set to release in Disney Lorcana is called Fabled. The set itself has some great callbacks to Disney’s classic Mickey Mouse and friends designs, but it also has plenty of newer fair – like those from A Goofy Movie, to celebrate the film’s 30th anniversary. With a mix of nostalgia and new artwork, there’s a lot to love about the cards in Fabled.
As usual for Disney Lorcana‘s sets, Fabled included two new starter decks. This time around, they are an Emerald/Ruby deck and an Amber/Sapphire deck. Both of the starter decks come with their own mechanics to help players get familiar with various strategies and the new cards in Fabled.
What’s In Disney Lorcana’s Fabled Emerald/Ruby Starter Deck
Celebrate A Goofy Movie In A Big Way
The Emerald/Ruby deck for Fabled puts A Goofy Movie front and center. Highlighted cards include “Max Goof, Rebellious Teen” and “Powerline, World’s Greatest Rockstar.” Cards featuring Roxanne, P.J., and the ’90s iterations of Goofy and Pete also join them. If you’re nostalgic for this era of Disney like I am, then you’ll love this deck.
The main TCG mechanic on display in the Emerald/Ruby starter deck is singing. Song cards – and the Powerline theme – are rampant in this deck. If you’re looking for a fun way to learn how to optimize Song usage, this deck is just about perfect for that.
What’s In Disney Lorcana’s Fabled Amber/Sapphire Starter Deck
Little Mermaid, Mulan, & More
Whereas the Emerald/Ruby is all about A Goofy Movie, the newest Amber/Sapphire deck for Disney Lorcana has a princess theme. Princesses are such a storied part of Disney’s history that this feels on-brand, but it is a bit underwhelming when compared to the freshness the other starter deck brings.
The highlighted cards here are “Mulan, Considerate Diplomat” and “Ariel, Singing Mermaid.” The Amber/Sapphire deck includes various glimmers of an assortment of Disney princesses, and it’s cool to see these classic characters with some new designs.
The focus of the Amber/Sapphire deck is on teamwork. Princesses work together to get Lore, and they can do so in a surprisingly aggressive manner. From a competitive standpoint, this seems to give Amber/Sapphire a bit of an edge over Emerald/Ruby, particularly when played against one another.
New Fabled Starter Decks Are Focused On Singing & Teamwork
How New Starter Decks Stack Up
For those who haven’t checked out previous starter decks for Disney Lorcana before, here’s what’s included in both of the Fabled decks:
- 1 ready-to-play deck of 60 cards (including 2 foil cards)
- 11 Damage counters
- 1 paper playmat
- 1 tracker token
- 1 booklet of game rules
- 1 booster pack (featuring 12 randomized cards)
The cards from A Goofy Movie give the Emerald/Ruby deck a bit of an edge. The focus on singing isn’t one I necessarily expected to love as a strategy, but I ended up having a great time. The biggest winner is the art, however, which gives these ’90s Disney icons the love they deserve.
The new Starter Decks for Disney Lorcana offer some nice additions and will work well if you’re new to the TCG.
The Amber/Sapphire deck for Fabled feels more traditional to what we’ve seen in Disney Lorcana before. Its focus on princesses and teamwork is so wholesome it’s hard not to like the cards here, even if there’s nothing especially revolutionary about the way the deck works.
Overall, the new Starter Decks for Disney Lorcana offer some nice additions and will work well if you’re new to the TCG. Even if you’ve been following since the beginning, the new cards in the Fabled set have gorgeous artwork. The nostalgia factor will also make them must-haves, especially for collectors and ’90s kids.
