Marvel Rivals’ Controversial Move: Introducing Original Characters

Even if Marvel Rivals has lost some steam after its massive influx of players at launch, that hasn’t stopped the hero shooter from remaining one of the most popular options on the market. While the generous cosmetic systems and unique art style certainly help Marvel Rivals stand out from the competition, its roster of incredibly iconic and unique characters is easily its best-selling point.

Marvel itself already has no shortage of amazing characters to draw from for playable heroes and villains, from iconic staples like Iron Man, Wolverine, or Spider-Man, while shedding light on underrated characters that never had a chance to shine on the silver screen.

Despite Marvel already offering the perfect edge that a game like Marvel Rivals could ask for with its practically endless character potential, its latest announcement could be throwing it all away in its future seasons.

Marvel Rivals Can Now Introduce Completely Original Characters

Despite its initial premise of bringing to life all your favorite Marvel characters, and some you’ve never heard of, against each other, Marvel Rivals has been given the green light to introduce their own original characters by NetEase, as reported by MP1st. While Marvel Rival‘s creative director Guangguang did confirm the statement, he didn’t provide any more information on the topic other than saying to “stay tuned” for more to follow.

NetEase also confirmed that they will be taking new measures to prevent future characters and events from leaking ahead of release, although they did not reveal any further details about how they will accomplish this change.

The announcement regarding the future of Marvel Rivals’ cast quickly blew up online as well, with NetEase facing an overwhelming amount of backlash over the decision. Given the countless fan-favorite characters still waiting for a chance to show off their prowess in Marvel Rivals someday, it’s not hard to see why players are so upset over the strange decision.

While Marvel Rivals’ latest update goes against the initial premise of the game, some members of the community brought up that it could be a way to combat the common complaint about Duelists taking up a majority of its cast.

Given how many Marvel characters naturally gravitate towards being a DPS, introducing original characters could be a way to fill in the gaps of its Strategist and Vanguard lineup without deviating too heavily from preexisting character concepts.

Even if some players will always be upset that their favorite character didn’t end up being a team-destroying DPS, the limitations of reworking a pre-existing character like Ultron into a Strategist offer plenty of room for creative workarounds, making many characters stand out even more than they normally would.

There’s No Shortage Of Marvel Characters Waiting To Shine

Offering A Diverse Variety Of Creative Characters

While it’s obvious there are still countless iconic heroes and villains like Dr. Doom and Mysterio, part of what made Marvel Rivals so unique in the first place was highlighting lesser-known characters from the comics. Even if heroes like Squirrel Girl, Psylock, or Jeff the Shark are far from deep cuts from Marvel Comics, they are still characters that most audiences coming from the films may have never even heard of before.

Each potential comic addition is just brimming with creative opportunities to let their personalities shine.

With how faithfully recreated each of Marvel Rivals‘ characters is, it’s a fantastic feeling to see relatively underappreciated characters getting the spotlight for once.

Combined with how Marvel Rivals‘ characters interact with each other through their various powerful team-ups and voiceline interactions, each potential comic addition is just brimming with creative opportunities to let their personalities shine alongside iconic characters at the forefront of the franchise.

Marvel Rivals isn’t the only game that experimented with mixing in original characters with franchise staples as well, with the Blizzard MOBA Heroes of the Storm also facing a wave of controversy over the decision in the past.

Although the eventual discontinuing of HOTS was caused by several other factors, it does feel like a slippery slope that could detract from the themed seasons and interconnected releases of its future characters.

The Diverse Roster Of Marvel Rivals Is Easily Its Greatest Strength

Even though the core gameplay of Marvel Rivals is what keeps players coming back all these months after release, Marvel Rivals‘ colorful cast of unique and recognizable characters is still the best way it sets itself apart from the competition.

In a sea of countless hero shooters like Overwatch or Valorant, whose characters can blend in with each other or seem generic in comparison, it’s more than a little confusing that Marvel Rivals seems ready to throw away such a key strength so soon after release.

There’s still some hope that Marvel Rivals won’t be resorting to the change after years of updates or holding back entirely after the backlash, but it still feels strangely out of character for NetEase to even consider the decision in the first place.

Even Marvel Rivals‘ own Luna Snow has been causing controversy since the MOBA’s initial release, with claims that her inclusion was made solely to capitalize on certain demographics rather than fans of the series.

Given how popular Luna Snow managed to become in the Marvel Rivals fandom, it’s not hard to see NetEase creating some excellent characters of their own in the future, but it would still make it harder to differentiate from the competition that doesn’t have the unique advantages of the Marvel IP.
