Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Will Trent season 4.Whether or not the ABC police procedural meant to, Will Trent just spoiled the resolution to both of its huge cliffhangers ahead of its season 4 premiere in a lighthearted way. Viewers will now find out the fates of two characters: Michael Ormewood (Jake McLaughlin) and Amanda Wagner (Sonja Sohn), who also happens to be Will’s (Ramon Rodriguez) nononsense boss.
During the third season, Will Trent‘s Detective Ormewood is diagnosed with a brain tumor. With his spatial awareness affected, Michael began having issues with his vision. In the finale, the detective fought against the domestic terrorist group, Founders Front, to save Atlanta from a bioattack. After his heroic deed, he suffered a dizzy spell and collapsed onto the floor.
Meanwhile, during the finale, the GBI deputy director found herself against members of the Founders Front. During the attack at GBI headquarters, Amanda was shot in the chest. Detective Angie Polaski (Erika Christensen) managed to fire back and struck down Amanda’s shooter. Luckily, Amanda was rushed to the hospital. Just like Michael’s, Amanda’s fate seemed uncertain as she underwent surgery.
Both Jake McLaughlin & Sonja Sohn Are Returning In Will Trent Season 4
Ormewood and Wagner are alive and well, as the official Instagram account of the cop show recently released a behind-the-scenes video from set. The caption announced: “Guess who’s back!? This crew is! #WillTrent is back in production!” The cast of Will Trent appeared in jovial spirits as they started filming. In the background, Sohn cooled herself with a handheld fan.
In the short video, Kevin Daniels, who plays Will Trent‘s Detective Franklin Wilks, appears to be seated alongside McLaughlin. The two actors cheered, “We’re back!” at the camera. McLaughlin, who had a buzzcut in the third season, has let his hair grow out. Ormewood and Wilks appeared to be partnered up as they are now sharing a desk.
Daniels took to social media and shared a slideshow from his most recent dinner with the cast and crew. McLaughlin and Sohn joined the rest of the ensemble for a group shot. In the following picture, the former Wire actress smiled and embraced Liz Heldens, the co-showrunner of Will Trent. Daniels and McLaughlin were all smiles as they took another photo together.
Why Will Trent Can’t Afford To Lose Either Amanda Or Ormewood
The series would arguably be too dark and heavy if Wagner and Ormewood met a tragic end. Amanda discovered Will as a boy in a dumpster near his mother’s dead body. Although she took care of Will, Amanda was a maternal figure for a brief time. Will would have lost his second mother if Amanda had died from the gunshot. Likewise,Michael would have left his two sons, Max and Cooper, fatherless if he had died.
Just because they didn’t meet their untimely ends doesn’t mean the show is without drama. In a possible story arc, Amanda could still be reeling from her near-death experience even after returning to work. If Wilks is Ormewood’s new partner, Michael will need his help to understand his environment because his job is still on the line.
Beyond the darkness, the characters are still integral to the story, and it’s rarely been a successful decision when a network show kills off beloved characters far too early. By keeping these characters alive, the writing team behind Will Trent has more potential storylines left to explore.
