Harlan Coben’s Lazarus Can Redeem Shelter’s Cancellation On Prime Video

Harlan Coben’s upcoming thriller series can finally make up for the cancellation of Prime Video’s Harlan Coben’s Shelter two years ago. Harlan Coben has had numerous successful TV adaptations of his work through his fruitful deal with Netflix. However, Prime Video’s Shelter deserved more.

Following the streaming success of Missing You and Fool Me Once, Coben’s work has gained attention — and with more projects on the horizon, that’s likely to continue. His upcoming Prime Video series has an impressive cast and intriguing premise, meaning it can finally redeem Shelter‘s untimely cancellation.

Harlan Coben’s Lazarus Can Redeem Shelter’s Cancellation On Prime Video After 1 Season

Sam Claflin stands in an office in Lazarus

Prime Video has recently released new information and images for Coben’s upcoming series, Lazarus. The show will star Sam Claflin as Laz, a forensic psychologist, and Bill Nighy as his father. Claflin’s character is set to become entangled in cold-case murders after experiencing his own tragedy.

Big leading names for the series already set Lazarus up for success, and given how well Coben’s new shows have fared on Netflix, Lazarus may be able to find the same response from Prime Video’s audiences. Currently, Lazarus is confirmed as a six-episode miniseries which will air on October 22, 2025.

Unlike many of Harlan Coben’s other adaptations, which were planned as limited series to cover one standalone novel, Shelter was based solely on the novel of the same name that began the Mickey Bolitar series. If the show had not been canceled, it could have run for at least three seasons to cover Coben’s corresponding books.

After Shelter‘s cancellation, Lazarus can finally give Prime Video a worthy rival to Coben’s Netflix shows. While Shelter was actually rated fairly highly, it simply never got the audience it deserved. Lazarus has a solid shot at remedying that, assuming Prime Video highlights its recognizable stars and creator, hyping audiences up for its release.

Lazarus & Shelter Have One Major Harlan Coben Story Difference

With Shelter season 1 covering the first book in the Mickey Bolitar series, the show could have continued adapting the other two books in the series, giving Prime Video at least three strong seasons. While adapting the books follows Coben’s usual tack, Lazarus is doing something completely different.

Rather than being based on a book like Coben’s other miniseries for Netflix, Lazarus is an original story written by Coben directly for the show with Danny Brocklehurst. This means that the series won’t face the typical struggles that adaptations can have in transferring material to the screen.

Beyond that, Lazarus being an original story by Coben is a huge win for fans of the author and those unfamiliar with his work. The series won’t be reliant on viewers understanding any of his past books. This also means that, unlike Harlan Coben’s Shelter, even his biggest fans won’t know the twists and turns coming in Lazarus.
