Warning! Warning! Spoilers for Spider-Man ’94 #1 ahead!
Marvel is giving fans the reunion between Peter Parker and Mary Jane that Spider-Man fans have clamored for in the new comic continuation of Spider-Man: The Animated Series. In the first issue of the series, MJ officially proposes to Peter, marking another alternate continuity Spidey story to depict the couple at their peak, while the pair remain canonically separated.
Spider-Man ’94 #1 is written by J.M. DeMatteis, with art by Jim Towe. It picks up where The Animated Series left off, and quickly takes the iconic power couple to the next level.
Peter and MJ ’94 are engaged, though it would be fair to assume the series will throw some complications at them before they reach the altar.

Peter Parker and Mary Jane first tied the knot in 1987, in a special one-shot issue entitled “The Wedding!” The characters were a married couple for the next twenty years, before Marvel used the 2007 “One More Day” storyline to wipe their marriage from continuity. Peter and MJ reunited as a couple for a time after that, but it was never the same.
Currently, they are canonically exes in Marvel’s main timeline. In Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, they’re married with children. Now, the return of the Animated Series continuity in Spider-Man ‘94 has that version of the couple getting engaged. As much as Marvel might be set on keeping the original Peter/MJ pairing on the backburner, it is still eager to give fans what they want.
Nearly twenty years are “One More Day” Spider-Man fans have never stopped carrying a torch for the idea that Mary Jane and Peter will one day wind up back together. Marvel has effectively said not to expect this any time soon; the publisher is content to explore the “What Ifs?” of their relationship in alternate continuity sources.

Mary Jane and Peter’s engagement is a gamechanger for Spider-Man #94. It is an exciting development for the couple’s loyal ‘shippers, but it also immediately raises the stakes for the series. Readers now have to worry that this version of the Webslinger could let his true love slip through his fingers just like the original.
Spider-Man: The Animated Series’ depiction of Peter and Mary Jane as a couple solidified her status as the hero’s endgame romance; the series was instrumental in creating the legion of fans who believe Peter and MJ are meant to be together. Now, as Marvel writes the couple’s next chapter, it carries the weight of the complications of the past twenty years.
