Romancing Sciel or Lune in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

While the main story in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is one of the most compelling I’ve seen in a long time, there is so much more depth to each character that is only visible through advancing each of their relationships to the maximum level. Although you’re able to embrace all platonic relationships freely, when it comes to romantic relationships, your options are much more limited.

WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR CLAIR OBSCUR: EXPEDITION 33!Increasing relationships in Clair Obscur is essential for unlocking each playable character’s best skills and even new exploration abilities. That being said, in the case of both Lune and Sciel, you will also have the option to romance them. However, if you have no interest in romance, you won’t be missing anything aside from some dialogue by rejecting both of them.

What Happens If You Romance Sciel In Clair Obscur?

Sciel Will Likely Present Herself First, Due To Her Romance Unlocking Earlier

Sciel and Verso’s relationship can be increased up to Level 4 to access her romance options, in which case she starts to seduce Verso. He doesn’t quite get the hint at first, but soon realizes that Sciel is trying to take things to the next level (literally). If you accept Sciel’s proposal, there will be a few different interactions where Verso and she can spend intimate time together.

Romantic scenes in Clair Obscur are very tame in comparison to things like the romance in Baldur’s Gate 3. They do not show any X-rated interactions. Instead, the subtitles will describe their time together, but even this is done so in a way that is more alluding to things than actually describing them.

Importantly, if you decide to accept Sciel’s invitation to be more than just friends beyond a certain point, you may no longer be able to romance Lune in Act 3. Additionally, Sciel’s story will mostly play out the same regardless of whether you romance or reject her.

Remember, there are no additional rewards or consequences in terms of gameplay regardless of who you choose, and you can always test out other options to see what happens in your NG+ run of Clair Obscur if you so desire.

Sciel and Verso’s relationship is mostly about having fun, though it’s implied Verso may not be able to keep his feelings out of it. Verso teaches Sciel to swim, and conveniently has a swimsuit for both himself and Sciel stashed away in case of any swimming emergencies.

Eventually — without giving too much away — Sciel learns something that changes her perspective on the situation, and she no longer feels it prudent to pursue a romantic relationship with Verso, and they spend one last night together. However, things do eventually shift back to Sciel missing her husband, and Verso ultimately ends up alone at the end of this “romance”.

What Happens When You Romance Lune In Clair Obscur?

Romancing Lune Can Be Tricky, Regardless Of How Things Go With Sciel

If you would rather romance Lune in Clair Obscur, it won’t be immediately clear that it’s even possible until you reach Act 3, advance her relationship to Level 6, and complete her side quest. Eventually, you’ll be able to make things more serious with Lune when you increase your relationship with her to Level 7.

Lune will kiss Verso on the cheek at Level 5, whether you romanced Sciel or not, but it won’t go any further than this if you’re heavily pursuing Sciel. There is a way to semi-romance them both, but it’s a bit complicated.

Unlike Sciel, there’s a required side quest to reach Level 7 in your relationship with Lune. Verso points you to Sirene’s Dress, a location just outside the Sirene Axon area from Act 2. Lune’s parents were part of Expedition 46, and, thanks to Verso, Lune learns Sirene’s Dress was her parents’ last known location.

You’ll have to fight the Chromatic Glissando enemy here, and it can be tedious if you aren’t properly leveled up, so you might want to wait on this one if you think you’re underleveled. Either way, once Lune listens to the journal, you can head back to camp.

Lune has a lot of complicated emotions towards her parents, which Verso attentively listens to, helping Lune come to terms with how things ended with her family. After speaking with Lune again next to the campfire, Verso inquires about what she’s working on in her journal, only to find she is writing a song. Depending on your choices up to this point, Verso will have the option to go “work on the song” with Lune in private.

Can You Romance Sciel & Lune In One Playthrough?

The Short Answer Is Yes, But Not Entirely

Lune and Sciel in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 looking at each other

This is somehow simultaneously the most asked question about this game and the least answered. Unfortunately, that’s likely because the answer isn’t straightforward, and there is heavy debate about what the exact requirements are. To answer simply, yes, you can pursue both Sciel and Lune romantically, but not fully.

If you are too involved with Sciel, Lune will ultimately reject you when her option arises. That being said, where exactly Lune draws that line is a bit foggy. I can confirm that if you accept Sciel during her first offer, at Level 4, this will not lock you out of pursuing Lune.

However, and this is where things get tricky, if you accept Sciel at Level 5 as well, there is a chance this may lock you out of pursuing Lune. So, if your goal is to pursue both, I’d recommend taking Sciel up on her initial offer and then veering towards friendship during every other encounter.

There are some claims that you can accept Sciel at Level 5 as well, so long as you don’t spend too much time with her after this, and still get Lune. However, I can’t personally confirm or deny this, as that was not my experience.

If you’d like a step-by-step on how to romance both, at least to a degree, pursue both relationships as normal. Accept Sciel at Level 4 when she initially offers, but after that, only encourage a platonic relationship. Be sure to level up both relationships as you go, and once you reach Act 3, complete Sciel’s storyline first, ending up as friends.

From there, go on and continue pursuing Lune romantically, and she should be open to the idea. After your “private time” with Lune, you’ll return to camp with her, at which point you’ll receive a line of narration indicating that Sciel knows what took place and smiles to herself, happy for you both.

Remember, though, it can be fairly tricky to achieve a romantic relationship with both women, as there is still a lot of debate as to what Lune flags as a relationship with Sciel. Others have reported denying Sciel entirely and still being refused by Lune, so just keep in mind that if it doesn’t work out properly the first time, you can always try again.

You Should Romance Lune In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Both Are Interesting, But Even Sciel Will Agree That Lune Is The Better Option For Verso

Romances in Clair Obscur are purely about roleplay, and there are no gameplay benefits for choosing Sciel, Lune, or not choosing either one. You’ll be able to advance both characters’ relationship levels to 7 and experience their core background story either way, so the choice comes down to which relationship seems like a better option for Verso, Lune, and Sciel as characters.

Sciel’s relationship with Verso is rooted in escapism, and while there is a surface-level connection between the two, Sciel will always be in love with her husband. In Act 3, she finds hope that she could someday see her husband again, and at this point, Verso is no longer on her mind in a romantic way. Verso and Sciel are better off as friends, which they even admit in the end, and for that reason, I think the better option is to pursue Lune.

Lune’s romance offers a more meaningful connection between the two characters that is rooted in a bond over their shared passion for music. Verso and Lune also experienced similar issues with their parents having unreasonable expectations for them, driving them to pursue things they weren’t particularly interested in as much as music.

Their romance is an overall healthier one for both characters involved, and even Sciel seems to approve once you’ve pursued things with Lune. So I’d recommend romancing Lune in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 if you only intend to pick one, because the bond between her and Verso is stronger and overall feels more appropriate to the story.
