X-Men Reveals Ransom’s Costume Comes from His Dark Origin

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Uncanny X-Men #20!

One mutant hero’s costume stands above the rest of the X-Men franchise’s newest additions, but its origin is way more disturbing than anyone expected. Readers of Marvel Comics’ Uncanny X-Men already knew the dark histories of the Outliers, a group of young mutants taken in by the Louisiana team. However, one hero’s mask has an especially traumatizing story behind it.

More details about Rogue’s new X-Men student Ransom and his origin are revealed in Uncanny X-Men #20, written by Gail Simone with art by Luciano Vecchio and colors by Matthew Wilson.

A flashback shows that the mask Valentin Correa wears as Ransom is identical to one worn by the kidnapper who terrorized and mercilessly shot the hero as a child.

Ransom’s Bleak Origin in “Uncanny X-Men” Reveals Surprising New Details About His Cool Costume

Although Ransom is one of the coolest new mutants in the franchise, even officially in Screen Rant’s list of X-Men heroes with the most aura, his origin may be one of Marvel’s most depressing. It was revealed earlier in Uncanny X-Men that Valentin was kidnapped years ago, and his parents refused to pay the ransom because he is a mutant.

While the origin was already upsetting, seeing it in action in Uncanny X-Men #20’s flashback truly hammers home just how tragic and devastating Ransom’s story is. He has one of the best superhero costumes of the X-Men franchise’s latest characters, but it comes with serious baggage. The new reveal shows that Ransom’s entire superhero persona is built around his trauma.

The new mutant heroes of the Outliers have become some of the franchise’s most unique modern characters, and Ransom has stood out in the group for his cool design and leadership qualities. While a disturbing moment from his past currently defines his name and mask, the character has consistently proven that he has a promising future in the X-Men franchise.

Rogue and Wolverine’s Most Exciting Mutant Recruit is Officially Embracing His X-Men Status

When digging up his harrowing origin alongside Wolverine in Uncanny X-Men #20, Ransom officially declares his X-Men status and embraces the team as his true family. Ransom’s revamped costume during Age of Revelation and its Unbreakable X-Men tie-in title already tease that the hero will eventually lose the mask worn by his attacker as he grows older in the franchise.

Ransom’s draping cloth with white-out eye mask has become a key part of his look, yet the reveal from his origin recontextualizes it, revealing ties to the hero’s greatest fears and trauma. It’s a seriously depressing origin for what’s become one of the X-Men’s best new character designs, but it makes Valentin’s journey as Ransom even more complex and compelling.

Uncanny X-Men #20 is available now from Marvel Comics!
