I have always wanted to get into the Resident Evil series. I have dabbled in it a little, playing some of Resident Evil 6 – which, I’m told, is the worst one – with my sibling, and Resident Evil 5 even less. However, beyond these more action-packed entries, my experience lies more in watching terrifying gameplay clips on YouTube with my tail tucked between my legs and my hands firmly over my eyes.
With the upcoming RE9 being playable sooner than we may think, I’m eager to finally give it a chance, especially the newer entries. Luckily for me, the long-held belief that Resident Evil isn’t for people like me is finally over, as the series has finally undergone a change that makes it not only more accessible but also significantly more varied and even potentially enjoyable.
Resident Evil Is A Very Varied Series
There’s Enough Types Of Experiences For Everyone
My biggest issue with Resident Evil is that it is simply too scary. The older games certainly felt this way, even up to the somewhat hilarious yet ultimately intense Resident Evil 4. As a young boy, I gave Resident Evil a go, but couldn’t get past a handful of creepy hallways and corridors before chickening out. That fear didn’t go away with the newer entries, with Resident Evil 7 proving to be the ultimate nightmare fuel.
The scariest Resident Evil games, however, have always been balanced out by the more action-packed ones, making it a surprisingly varied series. That changed with the newer entries, with 7 feeling like a return to the pure horror tone and Capcom remaking the earlier titles, which were, naturally, some of the scariest. Luckily for me, it looks like modern Resident Evil is evolving like the earlier games.
Modern RE Is Evolving Like Earlier RE Games
From Pure Horror To Action-Packed Escapades
Resident Evil Village isn’t devoid of scares, but it is certainly more akin to Resident Evil 4 than it is 7. Its first-person perspective still makes it a more immersive horror experience, but the tense setting of RE7 is gone and replaced with a more fantastical one. Resident Evil 8 actually feels like something I could stomach as a horror whimp, while RE9 looks perfect for those still seeking a truly terrifying game.
I love the balance between the two and the sheer variety of horror experiences on offer. It really is an amazing era for horror fans, especially those, like myself, who are just getting into the genre. RE Village may also prove to be a gateway into the rest of the series, and may even get me to finally pull the trigger and brave Resident Evil 7 and the frankly amazing-looking Resident Evil 9.
