David Fincher’s Se7en Resurges on Streaming 30 Years Later

David Fincher is one of the most celebrated working directors today. He has thrice been nominated for Best Director, including for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Social Network, and Mank. Fincher is known for his twisty psychological thrillers, which excite audiences and keep them guessing.

Included in this impressive filmography are movies like the 2014 book adaptation Gone Girl, which got strong reviews from critics during the time of its release. His most recent film release was The Killer, a Michael Fassbender-led thriller from 2023.

Though these newer titles have attracted a wider array of audiences to Fincher’s work, he has actually been working in the industry for over four decades. He got his start working for high-profile music videos, including artists like Rick Springfield, Roy Orbison, Madonna, Billy Idol, and The Rolling Stones.

Now, one of his movies from the mid ’90s is finding a new life on streaming three decades later.

Se7en is now doing incredibly well on streaming. The movie was released 30 years ago, in 1995, and follows the story of two detectives who are trying to take down a serial killer who is motivated by the seven deadly sins. It was the second movie Fincher ever directed, and was distributed by New Line Cinema.

The movie was nominated for an Oscar for Best Film Editing, and received positive reviews for its script, twists, and acting. The main cast was led by Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, and the star-studded cast also featured Kevin Spacey, Andrew Kevin Walker, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Daniel Zacapa.

According to HBO Max, Se7en is now a streaming hit. The movie came in at no. 3 on the platform’s top 10 movies in the United States on Saturday, September 6. It is beaten out only by Friendship and the first The Conjuring movie.

Se7en‘s resurgence on streaming shows just how much audiences still appreciate the movie after all these years. While newer Fincher works like Mank or The Killer may be more cinematographically refined than the Pitt and Freeman-led film, the movie’s twists and mystery quality still holds up today.

Furthermore, the streaming win shows just how impactful Fincher can be as a director. Audiences really connect with his movies, and find them compelling. This staying power is good news as Fincher continues his career, making the movie The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a possible American version of Squid Game, and more.
