Stephen King called The Final Score, which contains Collision, “the best crime fiction I’ve read in 20 years,” and now it’s being adapted into a movie with an A-list star. A short novel in Don Winslow’s upcoming story collection The Final Score, Collision follows a loving husband and father whose seemingly perfect life unravels after a single devastating mistake lands him in prison.
Forced to adapt and survive behind bars, he eventually earns his freedom, only to discover the shocking reason he was kept safe all along. What follows is a transformative mission that alters the course of his life forever.
Now, after a highly competitive bidding war involving multiple contenders, Amazon has secured the rights to Don Winslow’s short novel Collision with Jake Gyllenhaal set to star, according to Deadline. The actor will also produce via his Nine Stories banner.
What This Means For Collision
What To Know About The Adaptation
Earlier this month, Stephen King shared a post on X, formerly Twitter, calling Don Winslow’s story collection The Final Score “the best crime fiction I’ve read in 20 years. You’d think Winslow was mobbed up–it’s that good.” The post, shared to his seven million followers, led to a surge in preorders for the story collection, which will be released on September 17.
King’s post could have very well caused the competitive bidding war for Collision, which was ultimately won by Amazon and has secured an A-list star in Jake Gyllenhaal. This is likely just the beginning of its star-studded cast, since Amazon has another Don Winslow adaptation on the way, based on his short story Crime 101, which stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry, Monica Barbaro, Barry Keoghan, Nick Nolte, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Our Take On The Collison Movie
It’s Shaping Up For Success
Amazon is already deep into production on Crime 101, another Don Winslow adaptation written and directed by Bart Layton, so the studio clearly understands how to translate the author’s gritty storytelling to the screen. Backed by that experience, and with Gyllenhaal both starring and producing, Collision is already well ahead of the game.
King’s glowing praise, combined with Gyllenhaal’s star power, has created the perfect storm for Collision‘s success. As the project develops, attention will now turn to which high-profile writer and director will join the team. Given Winslow’s track record and early industry buzz, expectations are beginning to mount for Collision.
Collision does not yet have a release date.
