The MTV Video Music Awards went off with a bang, with phenomenal performances, well-deserved wins, and some stellar looks in 2025. Legends old and new graced the stage in Elmont, NY, with none other than long-time Grammy Award host, rapper LL Cool J, as this year’s MC.
The 2025 VMAs were chock-full of surprises and musical treats, from Yung Blood’s performance with Joe Perry and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, to Lady Gaga winning Artist of the Year for the second time this decade, and, of course, the performance of the night that has had everyone talking all week, Sabrina Carpenter.
Amid such a standout performance, her new album, and her wins in the best pop artist, best album, and best visual effects categories, Carpenter’s dominance on the fashion front has been discussed in the week following the VMAs surprisingly little.
Sabrina Carpenter Won Big On Stage And On The Red Carpet
Sabrina Carpenter’s performance of “Tears” off of her new album, Man’s Best Friend, has been all anyone’s been talking about since this year’s VMAs. Dancing alongside her was an ensemble of drag queens, many of whom carried signs of protest with slogans like “Protect the Dolls.” Needless to say, it was an electric performance.
In the company of her ever fashion-forward drag queens, Carpenter not only kept up, she excelled. Just like the pop icons who came before her, Carpenter boasted a number of intricately crafted outfits, intentional down to every detail. She arrived on the red carpet in a chic red lace gown, complete with a lilac boa resting on her wrists.
She had a handful of outfit changes, both for her performance and to take the stage to accept her three Moonmen trophies, and she used each one to prove the point that she was ready and belongs in the conversation, just like fellow music industry fashion icons Beyoncé and Lady Gaga.
From elegant couture callbacks like her red carpet outfit, to a youthful halter in her politically poignant performance, every one of Carpenter’s outfits for the VMAs was carefully chosen to project an air of both ambition and poise. In the cultural pantheon of fashion-forward musicians, Carpenter is already declaring herself an icon hardly one year after her debut album.
As she enters the era of her sophomore album, already with two Grammys and three VMAs under her belt, Carpenter is making some seriously harsh waves in both the music and fashion industries, and I, for one, cannot wait to see what’s next.
