Star Wars Debuts New Supernatural Villain the Nightlander

Warning! Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: Tales from the Nightlands #1!

Star Wars just introduced the deadly opposite of Force Ghosts, with the first appearance of the ethereal antagonist known as the Nightlander. After being accidentally unleashed by Anakin Skywalker, it appears that the Nightlander will be a recurring threat in the Star Wars mythos, returning across generations to battle the franchise’s most iconic heroes.

Star Wars: Tales from the Nightlands #1 is written by Cavan Scott, with art by Vincenzo Riccardi. The issue debuts the terrifying Nightlander in a story set during Anakin Skywalker’s formative Padawan years, while subsequent installments will jump to other eras.

The Nightlander herself is a terrifying new supernatural force in the galaxy that won’t be easy to reckon with.

Star Wars’ Terrifying New Villain “The Nightlander” Is The Opposite Of Everything Force Ghosts Embody

The Nightlander gives the term “phantom menace” and entirely new, and more literal, meaning in Star Wars lore. The Nightlander is a truly malevolent spirit, making it a dark counterpart to the benevolent Force Ghosts fans are accustomed to, without the terrifying villain needing to be connected to the Sith. Instead, she is a powerful force in her own right.

In Star Wars: Tales from the Nightlands #1, Anakin Skywalker and his new friend Daesha attempt to conjure the spirit of Daesha’s deceased grandmother. At first, they think they’re successful, only for the apparation to reveal itself to be the Nightlander. The entity’s opportunity to take Daesha as a vessel to escape into the physical world is thwarted…but only temporarily.

The issue takes place during a rare solar event the Twi’leks call a “Nightmare Conjunction,” and as Daesha’s rattled mother reminds Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi, it happens every thirty years. Of course, Star Wars fans know the franchise itself operates largely on thirty year cycles, confirming Nightlands will jump to the Original Trilogy next.

The cover for Tales from the Nightlands #2 shows Leia Organa. and Luke Skywalker the looming visage of Darth Vader, except with the Nightlander’s three sparkling eyes. According to the synopsis for the issue, it will be set in the immediate aftermath of Empire Strikes Back, as Luke, reeling from Vader’s paternal revelation, is forced to confront the Nightlander.

The cover for Tales from the Nightlands #3, meanwhile, shows the creature looming over Finn, revealing a Sequel Trilogy setting. Curiously, the preview mentions “a Twi’lek colony,” hinting that the Nightlander might make it off their home planet of Ryloth in the preceding issue. Beyond that, it is an open question how the Nightlander might further impact Star Wars canon.

Star Wars: Tales from the Nightlands #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
