Stan Lee Admitted He Wished DC’s Lobo Belonged to Marvel

There was one DC character Stan Lee loved above all others, so much so that the comic legend admitted he wished this icon belonged to Marvel. While this character is finally set to make a much-anticipated debut in James Gunn’s DCU, fans can’t help but wonder what might have been if Lee had held the creative rights to DC’s Main Man.

Fans may be surprised to learn that Stan Lee’s favorite DC character is none other than the abrasive, foul-mouthed anti-hero and occasional villain Lobo, who will make his DCU debut in Gunn’s Supergirl (2025) with Jason Momoa playing the Czarnian.

Lobo is one of DC’s wildest creations, infamous for wiping out his entire race for fun and being virtually immortal thanks to his healing factor and banishment from both heaven and hell. First appearing in Omega Men #3 (1983) and created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, Lobo has endured as one of DC’s most notorious icons. Yet, a resurfaced interview revealed that Stan Lee wished he had been the mastermind behind this infamous character.

Despite being the king of Marvel, Stan Lee never hid his admiration for Lobo, even declaring, “My favorite DC character is Lobo, although you couldn’t call him a hero.” Lee went further, admitting that Lobo would have been perfect for the Marvel Universe, as DC rarely seemed to know what to do with the character.

At a Fan Expo Q&A in Canada, Lee explained, “I thought [Lobo] was a character that should be a Marvel character, ’cause he was the worst human being on Earth, and he was so evil and vile and strong and ugly, and I loved him! But he belonged to DC. But they never knew what to do with him.”

This is exceptionally high praise for DC’s most infamous anti-hero, and on some level, it is a shame Lobo wasn’t a Marvel character. Under Lee’s pen, the Main Man would have undoubtedly starred in unforgettable stories, especially since the comic legend believed DC was underutilizing one of their most unique creations.

Marvel Missed Out on Lobo, But Found Their Own Deadly Anti-Hero in Deadpool

While Marvel missed out on Lobo’s unique brand of chaos and vulgarity, the publisher eventually found its own foul-mouthed, deadly anti-hero in Deadpool. Created by Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld, Deadpool debuted in New Mutants #98 (1990), bringing a mercenary wit and irreverence that filled the void for fans craving a Marvel character with a similarly anarchic edge.

Unfortunately, Stan Lee didn’t have much influence on Deadpool’s story, leaving fans to wonder what he might have envisioned for Lobo. Still, Lee remains part of Deadpool’s legacy through his cameo in the first Deadpool movie. It’s an epic contribution, though it still doesn’t give fans insight into what he would have done with Lobo.
