Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Black Rabbit.
After four incredible seasons, Ozark cemented its status as an all-time great criminal drama, but Netflix’s replacement show surpasses it when it comes to mind-blowing twists. Ever since it premiered, Ozark has been great at creating compelling drama, tense storylines, and keeping viewers hooked with plenty of shocking moments that made it hard to predict what would happen next.
There is no doubt it had some great twists throughout its run, and while not everyone was a fan of the controversial ending, Ozark is still among the 21st century’s best crime dramas. However, with the project wrapping up over three years ago, Netflix has been looking for some strong alternatives, and a new limited series feels like a worthy successor.
Black Rabbit premiered on September 18 and has taken the streaming world by storm. Although the reviews have been somewhat divisive, the explosive project undoubtedly has people talking, and although they might not compare in overall quality, Black Rabbit is even better than Ozark when it comes to diverting audience expectations and providing unexpected reveals.
Vince Being Revealed As The One Robbing The Rabbit With Junior Is Black Rabbit’s Most Genius Twist
Although Black Rabbit was full of swerves, the reveal that Vince was part of the Black Rabbit’s robbery was easily the show’s best. The messy heist on Jake’s restaurant was the very first scene of the entire show, but we had no context about who the masked robbers were or what their motivation was until late in the series.
Once Junior was introduced, his voice made it clear he was one of the two criminals, but the other remained a mystery. While the show set up Vince as his partner on several occasions, his involvement ended up being the ultimate twist, as his decision to join Junior was partly to protect his family and partly to prove himself.
Partaking in the burglary was an attempt to wipe away his debt and take away any burden from Jake, yet he only ended up making things worse. This contributed to his dark fate during Black Rabbit‘s ending, which added to how genius the twist of Vince being a robber was, given how heartbreaking his final moments were.
Black Rabbit’s Numerous Twists Still Felt Overwhelming
Between the robbery twist, Vince’s death, Jake covering up Anne’s assault, and the countless other unexpected directions Black Rabbit‘s plot went in, the whole thing felt overwhelming. Undeniably, the series still had a great finale, and its somber conclusion added to what makes it so special.
However, having so many big turns, especially late into the series, felt a little too much at times, and the crime thriller may have been better off limiting these. Vince being responsible for killing his and Jake’s father, alongside Jake’s affair with Estelle, were twists that muddied the lines about who was the worst Friedken brother in Black Rabbit.
Still, the story could’ve worked just as effectively without these unnecessary moments of drama that didn’t do a whole lot in changing the overall narrative. Black Rabbit is still a triumph in many ways despite its divisive reception, but while it contains one of TV’s best twists this year, having so many became more exhausting than beneficial in the long run.
