One of the beauties of games like Grand Theft Auto 6 is that they include elements from a variety of different games. The GTA games are part third-person shooter, part racing game, with some stealth built into the mix sometimes. The inclusion of things in GTA 5 like golfing, playing tennis, and participating in triathlons meant the game even includes some life-sim elements. There’s one other type of game that would be a perfect fit to include mechanics from in GTA 6, but unfortunately it would also be far too difficult to do well.
The open world of Grand Theft Auto games lends itself to a lot of different potential features, and because the games take place in a modern city, there’s plenty that would fit the setting. That said, there is a limit to how many features a game can include while also implementing them well. It makes sense that Rockstar would want to perfect things like shooting and driving before all else, and avoid adding features that would be too ambitious. Still, I can’t help but think that this one mechanic would be perfect for the series.
Skateboarding Would Make GTA 6 Incredible
A Massive Open-World With Skating Mechanics Would Be A Dream Come True
GTA already has multiple ways to get around, like cars, planes, and even some public transportation (which you can either ride or hijack). Grand Theft Auto 5 also included bikes, so including skateboards doesn’t initially seem like such a stretch. It would also be an amazing way to reshape how players approach traveling in GTA 6 if it was done well.

Playing Vice City Convinced Me That GTA 6 Is Focused On The Wrong Thing
GTA 6 is looking incredible, but sticking a Vice City disc into my PS2 made me remember what the franchise’s biggest strengths have always been.
Having recently been extremely disappointed by Schedule 1‘s skateboards, I can’t help but imagine what it would be like to ride around the beautiful environments we’ve seen previewed for GTA 6 on a skateboard with well-done mechanics. Imagine combining a game like Tony Hawk’s Underground with Grand Theft Auto. While there would obviously have to be fewer features than a game fully built around skateboarding, it would still be a ton of fun.
Having skateboards could also add exciting challenges and more silly moments to Grand Theft Auto 6. I’d love to challenge myself to outrun the police at a high star ranking with only a skateboard. With a fully open world, you could likely also find fun places to pull off wild stunts like jumping between rooftops in the city. Unfortunately, it would probably be too much of a hassle for Grand Theft Auto 6‘s developers to fully integrate skateboards in a satisfying way.
Skateboard Tricks Would Be Hard To Implement
Skateboarding In GTA Would Require A Lot Of Programming To Feel Satisfying
In a massive open world like Grand Theft Auto 6, it would be hard to include even some of the most basic skateboard tricks. Programming surfaces to allow you to grind on them would mean a huge amount of extra coding on a variety of different in-game objects. Sketching behind cards would require a variety of unique character animations to fit the many body styles of vehicles in Grand Theft Auto. The game would sadly have to restrict itself to simply jumping, and any tricks that don’t necessitate you to interact with other objects, like grabs or kickflips.

Grand Theft Auto 6 has a lot riding on it, but the developers can always look at the mistakes and successes of GTA 5 to make a better game.
There’s also the physics engine to consider. Games like Tony Hawk Pro Skater have to be a little liberal with how physics works to allow you to get massive air and perform unrealistic stunts. To get anywhere close to that, Grand Theft Auto 6 would need to rework how gravity affects your character, but specifically while on a skateboard so as not to mess up the rest of the game. That said, there are still plenty of features in GTA for extreme sports fans, like skydiving or dirt-biking. Still, I can’t help but wish for a massive open-world skating game.
