Captain Marvel Becomes Marvel’s Most Powerful Hero as Binary

For years, the X-Men have unquestionably been vastly more powerful than the Avengers, both in individual powerhouses and wider membership. Now, that has changed, as an Avengers icon ascends to become Marvel’s most powerful hero.

The hero in question is Captain Marvel – or rather Binary, as Carol Danvers embraces a new codename to mark her manifestation of cosmic power. While Captain Marvel has previously channeled the power of a literal star, now she has tapped into a source of power even more staggering – that of the Phoenix Force itself. As the avatar of the ultimate embodiment of creation, reality is now Binary’s plaything.

The change comes thanks to the new Age of Revelation event, which has jumped ten years ahead in Marvel’s timeline. Binary #1 comes from Stephanie Phillips, Giada Belviso, Rachelle Rosenberg and Travis Lanham. Sadly, the Avengers’ gain is literally the X-Men’s loss, as Carol declares, “Jean Grey is dead. And I have the powers of the Phoenix.”

The Age of Revelation is sweeping across the entire X-Men line, establishing a terrifying new status quo. Over ten years, the villainous Revelation has exposed America to the X-Virus, killing scores of humans and transforming the survivors into homo superior. Even the environment has changed, transforming most of the country into Revelation’s kingdom. Meanwhile, he’s corrupted various heroes to become his enforcers and gathered a personal circle who have vastly boosted his powers.

This is the world that Carol Danvers’ Binary is returning to after years in space, touring a universe which issue #1’s summary states is on the verge of collapse. It’s likely that Jean Grey perished during Revelation’s rise to power, with Francesco Mobili and Moreno DiNisio’s variant cover showing Captain Marvel being surprised by the Phoenix Force while flying in deep space. Why Carol was chosen is an open question, but it’s likely the Phoenix couldn’t have made a better choice…

With most of the best-known Avengers dead (as seen in Age of Revelation tie-in series X-Vengers), Carol is one of the last of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. However, she’s now more powerful than all of them put together. With her military training and experience leading various teams, Binary is the ideal choice to reshape the Age of Revelation. Few people have the will to resist being corrupted by the Phoenix Force while wielding its power, but Carol Danvers is on the top of the list.

It’s no surprise that the preview begins with an assassination attempt on Captain Marvel – as the new Phoenix, Binary could very well decide the future of the Marvel Universe all by herself, giving the Avengers one last chance to save the day in a world redefined by the X-Men.

Binary #1 is coming October 8 from Marvel Comics.
