The first trailer for Father Mother Sister Brother has arrived, providing an intimate exploration of the universal intricacies of family dynamics. Written and directed by Jim Jarmusch, the anthology film features an ensemble cast led by Adam Driver and Cate Blanchett. This past August, it premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and took home the highly coveted Golden Lion.
Now, Mubi has released the first official trailer for Father Mother Sister Brother, told in the form of a triptych following three separate stories across New Jersey, Dublin, and Paris as two siblings reunite with their estranged father, two sisters visit their mother, and twins grapple with the loss of their parents. Check out the trailer below:
In addition to the two-time Oscar nominee Adam Driver (Marriage Story, BlacKkKlansman) and two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine, The Aviator), the film’s star-studded cast also includes Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread), five-time Emmy nominee Mayim Bialik (The Big Bang Theory), Tom Waits, Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling (45 Years), Indya Moore, Luka Sabbat, Sarah Greene, and Françoise Lebrun.
Father Mother Sister Brother premiered at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Golden Lion, the highest prize awarded at the festival. It’s set for a theatrical release through Mubi, the same distributor that released The Substance, on December 24.
The trailer highlights much of the acclaim for the film, with critics calling it “gently moving,” “a film to savor,” and a “funny, tender, astutely observed jewel of a family triptych” with “an extraordinarily eclectic cast.” Father Mother Sister Brother‘s reviews also praise the film’s subtle humor, emotional authenticity, and poetic simplicity – resulting in a strong 81% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Ever distinctive and following his own rhythm, Jim Jarmusch has written and directed several independent films from Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999), Coffee and Cigarettes (2003), Broken Flowers (2005), Only Lovers Left Alive (2013), Paterson (2016), and The Dead Don’t Die (2019) – the last two of which also star Adam Driver.
Father Mother Sister Brother appears to continue Jarmusch’s exploration of subtle human rhythms, transient bonds, and the beauty found in everyday moments. With his trademark wit and unique eye for everyday life, Father Mother Sister Brother should serve as a poignant reminder that while you can choose your friends and lovers, you can’t choose your family.
