Néro the Assassin
Néro the Assassin is currently the second most popular series on Netflix’s global streaming charts after Monster: The Ed Gein Story. The brand new miniseries was just released on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, and is now completely available to stream on Netflix.
A French-language series with English subtitles and dubbed audio options, Néro the Assassin is a historical action drama series set in Southern France during the early 16th century. Described as a swashbuckler, a subgenre that features an over-the-top and gutsy swordsman like Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, Néro the Assassin consists of 8 total episodes, which is perfect to binge-watch over the course of one weekend.
Although the series is too new to garner attention from critics in the U.S., the immediate global popularity of the series speaks for itself. At the time of writing, Néro the Assassin has received more views than Netflix’s new horror docuseries True Haunting and its breakout crime mystery hit Wayward.
If you’re not trying to dive into “spooky season” content just yet, or need a break from the aforementioned horror series, then Néro the Assassin could be the perfect historical adventure series to escape to this weekend. Fans have described it as having great performances, plenty of gripping action, and have compared it to a scaled-down version of Game of Thrones.
The Haunting of Hill House
On the other hand, if you are looking for more horror series on Netflix after Ed Gein and True Haunting, you might as well go back to one of the greatest Netflix horror series of all time, The Haunting of Hill House. This timeless classic from Mike Flanagan is essentially must-watch TV this Halloween season and still holds up after being released way back in 2018.
If you did catch True Haunting this week, then you’ll still likely have the impression of its second story, “This House Murdered Me”, fresh in your mind. The Haunting of Hill House follows a similar premise, chronicling the past and present stories of a family that was broken apart by a series of terrifying events that happened in their childhood home, which turned out to be one of the most famous haunted houses in the world.
Flanagan has produced several more gripping Netflix horror series, including Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher, which are also great options this October 2025. That said, many viewers would argue that he has yet to outdo himself with The Haunting of Hill House, making it a modern masterpiece of the horror genre.
Critics agree that The Haunting of Hill House is a fantastic all-around series, which earned a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score and an 8.5 on IMDb, ranking at #190 on IMDb’s Top 250 TV Shows List. RogerEbert.com’s review noted, “The Haunting of Hill House contains some of the most unforgettable horror imagery in film or television in years.”
Dark Winds
One of the best shows to watch on Netflix, hands down, is Dark Winds, an AMC original series that has a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. Two of its three seasons are currently streaming on Netflix, and the third will be available to stream starting on October 27, 2025.
Dark Winds follows two Navajo police officers, Zahn McClarnon’s Leaphorn and Kiowa Gordon’s Chee, who investigate a double murder case in the 1970s Southwest United States. Collider called Dark Winds, “both a Western and a noir thriller that is at its most interesting when it delves into these deeper contradictions.” Critics agree that the series only gets better with age, with CBR calling season 3 “as entertaining and stunning as ever” in their 9/10-star review.
The first two seasons of Dark Winds only have 12 total episodes, each roughly 45 minutes long, making it a great option for a weekend binge-watch. Binge-watching the series this weekend will ensure that you’ll be prepared for the season 3 drop on Netflix towards the end of the month. Season 4 is already in development as well, giving viewers something to look forward to once they’re all caught up on one of the best shows streaming on Netflix right now.
