The Agency: Central Intelligence
The Agency, renamed to The Agency: Central Intelligence after its release, was one of the best new series released on Paramount+ last year and one of the greatest modern spy thriller shows on any streaming platform. It features a stellar ensemble cast led by Michael Fassbender, Jeffrey Wright, Jodie Turner-Smith, Richard Gere, Katherine Waterston, John Magaro, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, and more.
Compared to most modern action-packed thriller series like The Recruit and The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, The Agency is quite dense and plot-heavy, so you’ll want to pay close attention and keep the captions on to keep up with the developing action. Fassbender plays an elite but rogue field agent named Martian who breaks the cardinal rule of espionage when he gets romantically involved with a woman under his alias.
The series was developed for U.S. television by Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, known for writing the screenplays for Edge of Tomorrow, Ford v Ferrari, Fair Game, and more. While Fassbender is the primary star, carrying a similar robotic expertise as he did in David Fincher’s Netflix film The Killer, there are a lot of subplots and characters at play in The Agency, making it a fascinating and addictive binge-watch. At 10 episodes, with season 2 on the way, it’s one of the most promising new shows on Paramount+ right now.
The Offer
The Offer remains one of the greatest miniseries on Paramount+ and is surprisingly overlooked despite its outstanding Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 95%. The 2020 limited series also features an incredible cast, including Miles Teller, Juno Temple, Colin Hanks, Giovanni Ribisi, Dan Fogler, Burn Gorman, Matthew Goode, and more.
The Offer chronicles movie producer Albert S. Ruddy’s personal experience making the 1972 groundbreaking film The Godfather with director Francis Ford Coppola. Teller portrays Ruddy, who, in real life, provided his firsthand account of making The Godfather that had never been publicly revealed before the release of this series.
All fans of The Godfather must watch The Offer, but don’t go into it expecting a masterpiece on the level of the Coppola films. The series received mixed reviews from critics, resulting in a 57% Rotten Tomatoes score, but the vast majority of viewers loved the series. It earned an 8.6 IMDb score, making it the #157 best show of all time on IMDb’s Top 250 list.
Few series have such an enormous difference between critical and audience reception as The Offer does, with the audience ratings hailing it as one of the greatest miniseries ever made. Collider gave it a solid A rating, however, calling The Offer “a nail-biting and exhilarating exploration into the making of one of the most iconic and influential films of the 20th century.” In this case, especially, ignore the negative reviews from critics and give The Offer a shot this weekend.
Joe Pickett
Joe Pickett is one of the few series on Paramount+ with a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score for not just one but two seasons. Despite its overwhelmingly positive critical reception, Paramount+ chose to cancel the contemporary Western series due to lower-than-expected viewership.
Although there won’t be a Joe Pickett season 3, the 20 episodes that the series did release between 2021 and 2023 do make for some great television. There’s certainly a Yellowstone factor to Joe Pickett, dealing with family and cultural dynamics in a shifting neo-Western landscape set in middle America, but those elements weren’t enough to draw a big enough crowd that could have made Joe Pickett a household name.
Michael Dorman, best known for Patriot and Territory, stars as Joe Pickett, a game warden and family man who moves to a small rural town in Wyoming to oversee the uncivilized land around Yellowstone National Park. If you were a fan of Netflix’s series Untamed set in Yosemite, then Joe Pickett is a fantastic follow-up show to watch next on Paramount+, since it also revolves around a murder mystery with a Western feel.
