An Unexpected Marvel Hero Takes The Mantle

The Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s final 2025 project reveals who the last Avenger is, and the character is someone that MCU fans would likely not have guessed. The MCU’s Avengers movies undoubtedly make up what is the most important franchise in the shared universe. That is why excitement is through the roof for the two upcoming Avengers movies of the Multiverse Saga.

While we only know a few details about Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast and how Avengers: Secret Wars‘ story reboots the MCU, anticipation for the films continues to increase. That is why the MCU’s latest TV show is so interesting, as the project includes many Avengers with a twist that makes an unexpected hero the last Avenger left standing.

After three live-action MCU movies in 2025, with two of them teasing new Avengers teams for 2026’s Doomsday, it was an animated TV show that really went for the MCU crossover that the Multiverse Saga has been lacking. The TV-MA Marvel Zombies united several characters who had debuted in the past few years, many of which had never interacted before.

Some of the MCU’s original Avengers play a role in the multiverse series, with zombified versions of Hawkeye and Captain America going after heroes. Black Widow had already been revealed to have become a zombie in the original What If…? episode that led to the spinoff series, while Thor and the Hulk would come to die during Marvel Zombies.

When Ms. Marvel and her friends were trying to escape from New Asgard and the Scarlet Witch’s army, Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan called Thor the last Avenger. However, he refused that title, saying, “You are the Avenger now,” before fighting the Scarlet Witch and dying while the heroes escaped. Technically, the Hulk was alive then, but as he dies later, Ms. Marvel is the last Avenger.

Ms. Marvel’s animated role could soon translate to the live-action MCU in a way. Over the past few years, Kamala has been slowly putting a team of her own together, which is expected to be Marvel Studios’ Young Avengers. So far, Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop and Kathryn Newton’s Cassie Lang have seemingly been recruited for the team.

With Dominique Thorne’s Riri Williams being best friends with Kate and Kamala in Marvel Zombies, that could be the MCU’s hint that she will be the Young Avengers’ next member. In Avengers: Doomsday, the franchise could finally give Ms. Marvel’s team the official Young Avengers title, allowing Kamala to share the moniker she received in the MCU‘s latest show just a year later.
