Now that the excitement has started to die down after the smashing success of Saber Interactive’s Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, it’s the perfect time to look at what’s on the horizon for what the future of the long-running sci-fi franchise has in store. Unfortunately, even with several highly anticipated sequels already in the works for 2026 or even later this year, there are few tangible release dates available.
Thankfully, even if we don’t know when exactly to expect much of the unreleased content announced during the 2025 Warhammer 40,000 Festival of Skulls showcase, one surprising spinoff is ready to help creatively pass the time. Acting as a combined tech demo and creative marketing stunt, this entirely free offering from the Warhammer 40,000 universe has a new offering that makes it worth checking out once more.
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun — Words of Vengeance Just Got A Major Update
Jumping Back Into The Wonderful World Of FPS Typing
Having already been released as a free spinoff of Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun earlier this year during the Festival of Skulls, the Words of Vengeance typing shooter recently received a surprise update that doubles down on the amount of content available in the game.
While Words of Vengeance received plenty of praise for being a creative way to advertise Boltgun 2 and offering a surprising amount of challenge, its biggest complaints were about its higher difficulties and lack of replayability due to having only a few levels.
Thankfully, Words of Vengeance is already addressing these concerns by offering three entirely new levels to blast your way through, with over 400 unique words and phrases from the world of 40K alongside a brand-new quick-time mechanic to spice up the gameplay loop even more.
On top of being a fun way to warm up your typing skills in the morning, Words of Vengeance also offers a sneak peek at content that is likely to arrive in the full release of Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2. Despite revisiting some familiar locations, like Canyon Magrails and The Deep Vaults from the original Boltgun, Words of Vengeance still shows off a fresh side of these maps with newly designed environments.
Although a game like Words of Vengeance seems like a strange concept on paper, the full package wrapped up in Boltgun‘s iconic pixelated art style worked surprisingly well enough to bring in a staggering total of 200,000 unique players. Offering a fresh, albeit short-lived gameplay experience, the creative Words of Vengeance is more than worthy of its newest update to bring it back into the spotlight.
Words Of Vengeance Does More Than Pass The Time Before Boltgun 2
Helping Survive The Absence Of Major Warhammer Projects
With how jam-packed the past few years have been for excellent Warhammer 40,000 projects from games like Space Marine 2, Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, and a plethora of iconic remakes for games like Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War, it’s hard not to be distraught by the lack of official dates to mark down on a calendar.
While Mechanicus 2 is still slated for a 2025 release, Boltgun 2 could be released first as the next major game in the series. Its spinoff, inspired by retro typing shooters like Type Attack or The Typing of the Dead, will help bridge the gap for fans of the series in the meantime.
Acting as not only a way to introduce entirely new players into the franchise in a more comedic and completely free format, Words of Vengeance also does a great job at bringing more attention to the underrated 40,000 Boltgun experience, which acts as a prequel to Space Marine 2 that directly follows the ending of the original game.
With Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 already having been confirmed to be in development by Saber Interactive, it’s even more beneficial to get a better understanding of Titus’ character and origins throughout each wildly different game series’, even if Words of Vengeance is far from a canonical follow-up.
Words Of Vengeance Opens The Door To A Whole New Genre Of Games
Warhammer Isn’t The Only Franchise Experimenting With The Format
Even though Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun — Words of Vengeance was one of the most explosively popular typing games in recent years, it’s far from the only contender on the market. Although FPS typing games have still been largely left behind, indie games like Epistory – Typing Chronicles or Cryptmaster still keep the format alive by incorporating the gameplay concept in more creative ways.
If you’re looking for a simpler, direct typing game experience like Words of Vengeance, however, the indie studio Button Mash recently released a free demo for their upcoming Battle Royale typing game, Final Sentence, on Steam.
Pitting you against 99 other players in a classic Battle Royale format, you’ll need to race against your opponents by typing as fast as you can while avoiding spelling mistakes, as falling behind or making too many will result in a swift death from a masked overseer. On top of the creative gameplay implementation, Final Sentence also incorporates a ranking system to suggest areas of improvement for your real-world typing skills.
If you’re not a fan of typing games but are still itching for more Warhammer 40,000 content in the meantime, Bulwark Studios recently released a demo for the upcoming Mechanicus 2. Incorporating the same tense tactical combat alongside a whole new playable faction with the Necrons, Mechanicus 2 is shaping up to be another strong outing in the grimdark franchise alongside Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun.
