Stephen Amell’s acclaimed pro wrestling drama, Heels, gets a hopeful update about a revival from series creator and executive producer Michael Waldron. Heels seasons 1 and 2 premiered on Starz in 2021 and 2023. After Starz canceled Heels, Netflix acquired the series in 2024.
Heels stars Stephen Amell as Jack Spade, who oversees the Duffy Wrestling League, with himself and his troubled younger brother, Ace (Alexander Ludwig), as the promotion’s top stars. Heels also stars Allison Luff, Mary McCormack, Kelli Berglund, Chris Bauer, and Mike O’Malley.
In an interview with The Playlist about his Glenn Powell-led sports drama, Chad Powers, Michael Waldron addressed the possibility of more Heels on Netflix. Waldron notes Heels’ popularity with audiences who watched it, but Michael hints the wrestling drama needs “its Suits moment.” Read Waldron’s quote below:
Never say never. Almost everyone who saw it loved it. Maybe it just needs its Suits moment.
Why Heels Needs Its “Suits Moment” To Get Season 3 On Netflix
Michael Waldron is referring to how Heels needs the kind of audience boost that Suits received on Netflix. Suits premiered in 2011 on USA Network and ran for 3 seasons. Arriving on Netflix in 2023, Suits found an even bigger global audience and smashed viewership records on the streamer.
Although Netflix hasn’t released exact numbers for Heels‘ two seasons, the Stephen Amell-led pro wrestling show has reportedly done well. However, Heels hasn’t achieved the kind of viewership that matches Suits‘ massive popularity on Netflix. Still, Michael Waldron says, “Never say never.”
Ironically, Stephen Amell was tapped to star in Suits LA, a spinoff of the original Suits. Unfortunately, Suits LA was canceled after one season on NBC. While Amell remains in demand, he and the cast of Heels would be open to returning to the ring in Duffy, Georgia.
Our Take On Heels Season 3 On Netflix
Heels is a hidden gem on Netflix, a splendidly written, acted, and directed depiction of a minor league pro wrestling outfit, and the family and friends who keep the action going in the ring. Stephen Amell, Alexander Ludwig, and Heels‘ talented cast are proud of the series and are reportedly willing to reprise their roles.
Netflix has gone all in on professional wrestling, from paying millions to stream WWE Monday Night RAW every week, the behind-the-scenes documentary series WWE Unreal, the limited series Mr. McMahon, and other shows like Wrestlers.
Heels fits Netflix’s wrestling portfolio well, and it’s a rare fictional series about pro wrestling that gets the details right. Heels ranks favorably among the best TV dramas on Netflix. As Michael Waldron says, audiences who see Heels tend to love it.
I’m one of the viewers who loves Heels and wants it to continue with season 3 or a revival. Picking up a few years after the cliffhanger that ended Heels season 2 might even benefit the show and push the story of the Spade brothers and the DWL forward in fascinating ways.
