New WW2 Movie From The Studio Behind Sound Of Freedom Debuts With Strong Rotten Tomatoes Score

Truth & Treason is winning over critics. The movie is the latest theatrical release distributed by the faith-based outfit Angel Studios, which is best known for their controversial 2023 trafficking drama Sound of Freedom. Truth & Treason is a World War II drama that follows a teenager who is tried in Nazi Germany after starting a resistance group.

Rotten Tomatoes has now aggregated enough critics’ reviews to give the new movie an official Tomatometer score. While the score could fluctuate as more reviews are added, at the time of writing, 13 different critics have weighed in to give Truth & Treason a remarkably high 92% score.

While its only negative review gives it a middling score of 2 out of 4, Truth & Treason‘s positive reviews range from strong to near-perfect. In fact, three of its reviews give it scores of 3.5 out of 4, while it also earned a 4 out of 5 score from Keith Garlington of Keith & the Movies.

Generally, critics agree that the movie tells a dramatic and tense story that is brought to life by an ensemble of skilled actors that includes Ewan Horrocks (The Last Kingdom), Joanna Christie (Narcos), Nye Occomore (Grantchester), Ferdinand McKay (Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time), Daf Thomas (The Undeclared War), and Rupert Evans (Hellboy).

This Rotten Tomatoes score has not helped Truth & Treason thrive in theaters, as its projected 3-day domestic opening weekend gross of $2.5 sees it debuting outside the Top 5 for the weekend, hitting No. 6. However, box office is not a solid metric by which to assess the relative quality of Angel Studios movies.

The distributor is known for their pay-it-forward ticketing campaign, which they used most prominently during the theatrical release of 2023’s Sound of Freedom. This involved the company encouraging viewers to buy additional tickets, allowing other audience members to see the movie for free. However, it is unclear how many of those tickets were actually claimed.

Therefore, Sound of Freedom‘s $251 million gross may have been artificially inflated. However, Truth & Treason‘s Rotten Tomatoes score may also need to be taken with a grain of salt. Of the limited number of reviews that have been aggregated, only two of them come from critics who are deemed “Top Critics” on the platform.

One of those two Top Critics is RogerEbert.com‘s Robert Daniels, who penned the only negative review that the movie has received so far. Given that fact, it is possible that the non-legacy publications reviewing Truth & Treason are ones that were predisposed to have a positive reaction, though it is also possible that other Top Critics might like the movie if they decide to review it.
