Carrie, one of the most iconic Stephen King movies, will be available to watch on a free ad-supported streamer starting in November. King’s books have been adapted countless times over the years, including Carrie, The Shining, Misery, Pet Sematary, It and The Shawshank Redemption. A prequel series to It called Welcome to Derry will premiere on HBO on October 26.
Meanwhile, a series adaptation of Carrie from filmmaker Mike Flanagan is currently in production.
Before a new version of Carrie hits screens, though, the original cinematic adaptation, which was released in 1976, will be available to watch for free on Tubi beginning November 1. The 2013 remake with Chloë Grace Moretz is also coming to Tubi on the same day; it is currently on MGM+.
Other movies being added to Tubi on November 1 include Hachi: A Dog’s Tale, The Grey, Incendies, Stargate, Hot Tub Time Machine, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Trap, Child’s Play, Jingle All the Way, Teen Wolf and Stephen King’s The Shining.
Interest in films based on the author’s horror books has not waned; if anything, adaptations of King’s work are increasing, including with the upcoming TV show remake of Carrie for Prime Video. The cast includes Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, Siena Agudong, Matthew Lillard, Samantha Sloyan, Alison Thornton, Thalia Dudek, Amber Midthunder, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti and Joel Oulette.
Flanagan isn’t a stranger to adapting King’s stories. He previously directed Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep and The Life of Chuck, and has created other horror projects like The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and The Fall of the House of Usher.
Flanagan is following in the footsteps of Brian De Palma (1976’s Carrie), Katt Shea (The Rage: Carrie 2), David Carson (2002’s Carrie) and Kimberly Peirce (2013’s Carrie), who have all directed movies based on King’s 1974 novel about a high school teenager named Carrie White who has the power of telekinesis while dealing with an overbearing religious mother.
One of the most iconic scenes from any horror story occurred in Carrie when pig’s blood drenched the teen after she walked on stage to accept the honor of being prom queen following a rigged election.
The original Carrie film has a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, with overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie earned Oscar nominations for their portrayals of Carrie and Margaret White, respectively.
The 2013 version of Carrie didn’t receive the same reception from critics or moviegoers upon its release. With a 51% on Rotten Tomatoes, this remake is considered Rotten under the review website’s guidelines, which state that a movie or show needs at least 60% to qualify as Fresh.
Carrie didn’t even debut at the top of the box office; instead, it placed third on opening weekend, with Gravity and Captain Philips taking the top two spots.
Even though Halloween will already be over by the time November 1 rolls around, at least fans can still get their fix of the iconic King story when Carrie arrives on Tubi in November.
