Squid Game Season 3’s Player 333 Twist Is A Reminder That Thanos Was Right

Myung-gi/Player 333’s story took a shocking turn in Squid Game season 3, revealing that Thanos had been right about him since the beginning. When Thanos confronted Player 333 in Squid Game season 2’s early moments and picked on him with Nam-gyu, it was hard not to feel bad for him. Thanos and his men constantly ganged up on him and ensured that he remembered how he was the reason why so many of them ended up in the games.

It seemed unfair that so many players were picking on Player 333 when he, like them, only made a massive financial mistake. However, the more Squid Game season 3 progressed, the more it became evident that Thanos was not wrong about the character. Even though Thanos himself was no saint, he could see right through Player 333’s lies and innocent demeanor. Squid Game season 2’s opening arc revealed that Player 333 was why many people ended up in the games. He once ran a popular YouTube channel called MG Coin, which shared financial knowledge surrounding cryptocurrency investments. Instead of understanding how many people depended on him, Myung-gi convinced his followers to invest in a cryptocurrency scam. As a result, along with him, many eventually lost their hard-earned money.

Instead of taking accountability for his actions and accepting legal punishment, the character abandoned his girlfriend, Jun-hee, and disappeared. He only emerged from hiding when the games gave him the opportunity to win a massive sum and recover everything he had lost. Player 333’s backstory seems to perfectly highlight how his morals were always skewed, given how he not only defrauded several people for personal gain but also showed no guilt or remorse for the lives he destroyed.

He Learned Nothing From His Past Mistakes

After learning about Jun-hee’s pregnancy and realizing how his mistakes had harmed her, Player 333 could have easily flipped his script by looking out for her. Instead, he still seems to care little about her and tries to convince her to give him the money she will potentially win through the games. He claims to know people who could help them park their money in shady investments. This highlights how he learned nothing from his past mistakes.

If he genuinely cared about Jun-hee and the baby, he would not have even brought up the winning prize when he talked to her in season 2’s earlier arcs. He would have focused more on Jun-hee’s well-being and also tried to get her out of the games. The fact that he keeps thinking about getting his hands on Jun-hee’s prize money at the games instead of focusing on creating a better and safer future for her shows how selfish he always was.

As soon as Myung-gi brought up the idea of combining their winnings and reinvesting them in another skewed venture, Jun-hee realized he did not care about her. Given how Player 333 promised Jun-hee he would protect her in the hide-and-seek game, it seems like he had some semblance of humanity left in him in Squid Game season 3’s early moments. However, even during the third installment’s first game, his morality was starting to slip as he went on a murderous rampage with Nam-gyu to eliminate competition and win an even bigger sum. He also killed Hyun-ju because his need to earn more from the games overpowered the little loyalty and empathy he had left for his former partner.

Player 333’s gradual fall from grace eventually led him to make one desperate decision during the games’ final level. He was so blinded by his desire to have the grand prize all for himself that he was even willing to sacrifice his baby. Fortunately, Gi-hun was around to save the child in Squid Game‘s finale.

In a lot of ways, Player 333’s story in Squid Game serves as a cautionary tale of how unchecked ambition can consume one to a point where everything from relationships to even self-preservation becomes secondary. Player 333 was never among the show’s heroes, but he still had some redeeming traits in the beginning. He even considered helping Jun-hee during the Jump Rope game before she declined after sensing his true intentions. After Jun-hee’s death, nothing stopped him from letting his greed take over, explaining his final decision in Squid Game.
