Three original Malcolm in the Middle stars reunite in a set image from the Disney+ reboot, although one notable actor is missing. The Malcolm in the Middle revival’s cast is led by Frankie Muniz, who is reprising his role as the titular character. Malcolm’s parents, Hal and Lois, are once again played by Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek.
The series, which features four 30-minute episodes, is titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, and will be available to stream on Disney+. Filming concluded in May and the show will premiere in December, although an exact release date has not been announced yet.
Now, Muniz has posted a behind-the-scenes image with Justin Berfield and Christopher Masterson, who played Malcolm’s brothers Reese and Francis in the original series and are also in the revival. Muniz says he was told not to post the image yet, but felt compelled to after remembering the theme song, missing his brothers, and being excited about the upcoming release of the episodes. Check out the post below:
Missing from the image is Erik Per Sullivan, who played Malcolm’s brother Dewey in the original show. Sullivan chose not to play Dewey again because he is pursuing a master’s degree at Harvard and has moved on from his acting career, with his last credit being in the 2010 movie Twelve. He is the only original main cast member who is not returning.
As such, Dewey has been recast with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark. While he is new to the world of Malcolm in the Middle, Ellsworth-Clark has starred in episodes of several notable shows, including Wyonna Earp, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Expanse, and Fargo.
Despite the recast, Muniz and the rest of the cast and crew have only expressed excitement about the all-time great sitcom being revived. Muniz’s latest post is evidence of this, with the actor unable to contain his enthusiasm as he teases audiences with the reunion of Malcolm and two of his brothers.
While the upcoming season only consists of four episodes, Disney executive Eric Schrier shared that if the four episodes are a success, Malcolm in the Middle‘s future could be further extended. If the viewership is high enough, this means that the reunions could continue for more seasons.
Disney+ has had success with some of its original streaming series from the Star Wars, Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Pery Jackson franchises, but Malcolm in the Middle offers a different kind of popular IP that can become a new hit for the streamer.
