Warning: This article contains spoilers for chapter 1163 of One Piece! While he may play a very important role in Luffy’s journey in One Piece, Shanks continues to be one of the series’ biggest enigmas. Even over two decades later fans know very little about the swashbuckling pirate, but luckily, things are finally changing with One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.
From finally confirming Shanks’ Figarland heritage to revealing his long-lost twin brother, Shamrock, the Elbaf Arc has been exposing all of Shanks’ biggest secrets. Adding to this, One Piece’s latest release circles back to Shanks yet again amidst the chaos on God Valley, finally explaining a huge mystery about his origins.
One Piece Finally Explains How Shanks Ended Up In A Chest
When One Piece Film: Red was released back in 2022, a pamphlet distributed to select attendees titled Volume 4 Billion surprisingly revealed part of Shanks’ origins, including how he ended up in Roger’s care. The pamphlet included a rough sketch of the Roger Pirates finding a young Shanks in a treasure chest after the God Valley Incident.
With every new revelation about the God Valley Incident and Shanks’ World Noble lineage, fans have only gotten more and more confused about how a Holy Knight’s child could have ended up in one of the prize chests at all. All that said, One Piece’s latest flashback has finally provided some answers.
Chapter 1159 saw a young Dragon tasked with getting Shanks and Shamrock off the island by their dying mother. Having lost Shamrock to St. Maffey, chapter 1163 now sees Shanks also separated from Dragon and crawling toward a treasure chest much like the one he was discovered in, finally putting the mystery to rest.
One Piece’s Shanks Is Still Full of Secrets
All in all, while one big mystery about Shanks may have been put to rest in the latest chapter, there’s still plenty left to unpack about Shanks, particularly what his end goal could be in One Piece. The Elbaf Arc has added even more intrigue to his character, dubbing him a “child of fate.”
For now, Shanks seems to be aware of his Figarland lineage and has also visited Mariejois, according to Shamrock. However, it appears as though Shanks rejects his noble lineage, but it’s hard to be sure where exactly he stands in terms of his opinion of the World Government.
That said, wanting to overthrow the World Government could perhaps explain why Shanks stole the Gum-Gum Fruit, or rather, the Nika Fruit all those years ago. This could also potentially explain Shanks’ motives for going after the One Piece, which, according to Vegapunk, could determine the very fate of the world.
