The Underrated HBO Sitcom That Deserves More Attention

Fired on Mars is an underrated animated sitcom on HBO that too few people saw. The pantheon of great sitcoms is mostly made up of live-action TV series, save for a few notable exceptions like The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers. Fired on Mars needs to enter the conversation, however, and join the ranks.

HBO is not necessarily known for its sitcoms, but you can expect that when it gives the genre a try, it’s going to knock it out of the park. Fired on Mars is a workplace sitcom set on Mars and perfectly captures the malaise of modern work life, making a point of how technological processes won’t necessarily make things better.

Fired On Mars Is A Hilarious, Relatable Sitcom

Fired on Mars is a 2023 TV show that’s set in the near future, where mankind has managed to colonize Mars to an extent. Their first order of business? Begin a start-up tech company there, because of course, that would be the extent of man’s ability to dream. Luke Wilson voices Jeff Cooper, a graphic designer for Mars.ly.

Very soon after moving to Mars, Jeff is fired from his role, but he doesn’t have an option to return to Earth. He gets caught in the mother of all HR conundrums as the company tries to figure out what to do with him, and Jeff tries to figure out if making an effort is worth it with a company that seems incapable of recognizing loyalty, skill, or interests.

It’s an incredibly relatable sitcom, in the vein of movies like Office Space, Fired on Mars shows how the world of corporate speak, do-nothing managers, and labyrinthine workplace procedures can be its own special kind of hell. It doesn’t matter if your work is on Earth or on Mars; it’s going to suck.

Why Fired On Mars Season 2 Hasn’t Happened

Fired on Mars premiered on HBO Max in April 2023 and ran for eight episodes, ending on a big cliffhanger that sees Jeff leaving the colony, seemingly for good. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we’ll see where Jeff was heading off to because there has been almost no news about Fired on Mars season 2.

With an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes from audience members, Fired on Mars certainly has the audience acclaim to keep going, but the fact that it doesn’t even have a critic’s Tomatometer score should set off some alarm bells that not enough people watched it. Viewership will always have the final say about a show continuing or not.

Since the show ended, there has been no news about season 2, and with a stacked cast like the one Fired on Mars has, it might be difficult to get together a voice cast that includes Wilson, Tim Heidecker, Pete Davidson, Emily Watson, and Thomas Haden Church. Still, even with the cliffhanger, Fired on Mars deserves your attention.
