The cast of American Horror Story season 13 has been revealed, and it has many familiar faces that have starred in some of the best seasons of the show, raising suspicions about a possible sequel to season 3, Coven. After a disappointing 12th season with Delicate, American Horror Story is preparing its return with a 13th season.
As it always happens with a new season of American Horror Story, there’s a lot of speculation around the horror themes it could address, and though this hasn’t been revealed yet, the cast has. The cast for American Horror Story season 13 includes many series veterans and new additions, but the returning cast members have two seasons in common: Coven and Apocalypse.
American Horror Story Season 13 Features Many Returning Coven Cast Members
Series co-creator Ryan Murphy had already teased the return of veteran American Horror Story cast members Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters, and an official announcement on the Ryan Murphy Productions Instagram account has now confirmed their involvement.
Accompanying Paulson and Peters are fellow recurring cast members Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman, and fan-favorite Jessica Lange, with Ariana Grande making her American Horror Story debut.
The connecting links between these actors (except Grande, of course) are the seasons Coven and Apocalypse, with the latter being a crossover between Coven and Murder House. Coven is American Horror Story’s third season, and it introduced the audience to the witches from Miss Robichaux’s Academy, led by the Supreme, Fiona Goode (Lange).
The witches face different threats, among them Voodoo queen Marie Laveau (Bassett) and the ruthless Delphine LaLaurie (Bates). Although Grossman and Lourd weren’t part of Coven, they played witches in Apocalypse, with Lourd’s character being the key to defeating the Antichrist.

Although, as mentioned above, the theme for American Horror Story season 13 hasn’t been revealed, the cast is the perfect basis for a sequel to Coven, and the line shared in the cast announcement is an iconic one delivered by Madison in Coven. Surely, the events of Apocalypse complicate this as it rewrote history, but the show could opt for ignoring the events of that season, which it kind of already has done by ignoring the presence of another Antichrist.
Why AHS: Coven Needs A Sequel Season
Although Apocalypse exists, Coven hasn’t had a sequel season, nor has any other season of American Horror Story so far. Apocalypse is a crossover between Murder House and Coven, as the main threat to defeat is Michael Langdon (Cody Fern), the Antichrist, who was conceived in Murder House.
The only hope to bring Michael down is the powerful witches of Cordelia’s coven, which is why they are brought back, with the addition of witches Mallory and Coco. Apocalypse rewrote the timeline and made it more confusing, so it isn’t exactly a sequel to Coven (or Murder House).
Coven is widely considered one of the best American Horror Story seasons and it’s a fan favorite, so if a season is ever chosen to get a proper sequel, it should be it. It’s to be seen what American Horror Story season 13 will be about, but it already has the cast it needs to be a Coven sequel.
