Ted Lasso star Nick Mohammed teases how season 4 will focus on new characters. After seemingly ending with season 3 in 2023, Apple TV confirmed in March 2025 that Ted Lasso season 4 was officially happening, and filming began in July.
Jason Sudeikis returns to reprise his titular role, and is joined by Hannah Waddingham as Rebecca Welton, Juno Temple as Keeley Jones, Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent, Brendan Hunt as Coach Beard, and Jeremy Swift as Leslie Higgins. This time around, Ted comes back to Richmond to coach a women’s soccer team.
During an interview with Collider, Mohammed, who plays Nathan Shelley, was asked if he had heard anything about his Ted Lasso future. While he is “sworn to secrecy” and cannot divulge anything about his potential role, Mohammed did share that the new season is “about a whole different set of characters.” Check out his comments below:
I think sworn to secrecy is about right. Look, I know that it’s about a whole different set of characters. I can’t even talk about it without giving anything away! We’ll have to see. We’ll have to see who pops up where and when. But I know that they’re filming it now, and I’ve been socializing with them all. They’re all very well, so we’ll see what happens.
With so many members of the original Ted Lasso cast confirmed to be returning, Mohammed’s comments are somewhat surprising, especially for fans expecting a direction continuation after season 3 and eager to see more of their favorite characters.
What Mohammed is likely referring to is that season 4 is focusing on A.F.C. Richmond women’s team instead of the men’s team.
Instead of Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster), Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh), and Dani Rojas (Cristo Fernández), the focus will shift to the players on the new team.
The new cast includes Tanya Reynolds (Sex Education), Faye Marsay (Andor), Jude Mack (Back in Action), Abbie Hern (Enola Holmes 2), Rex Hayes, and Aisling Sharkey. Grant Feely (Obi-Wan Kenobi) is taking over the role of Ted’s son, Henry, who was previously played by Gus Turner.
With Rebecca, Keeley, and Leslie helping to manage and promote the women’s team, and Ted coaching it, they are set to return in prominent roles, but they will largely be interacting with new characters instead of some of the familiar faces fans are used to seeing.
Jamie, Sam, Dani, and other members of the men’s team could definitely make appearances, but their primary story concluded with Ted Lasso season 3’s ending. Coach Beard and Roy coaching the men’s team will make it easier for some of those characters to return, though.
As for Mohammed, returning in some capacity seems likely, especially since Nate was last seen coaching alongside Roy and Coach Beard. His role may be more infrequent than in the past and kept a secret until the season releases, which would explain why the show wants to keep it under wraps.
There is still a great deal of mystery surrounding Ted Lasso season 4, and there is no confirmed release date yet, but the new season is poised to balance new and established characters in a way designed to be both familiar and refreshing.
