Bowen Yang returns as George Santos on the most recent episode of Saturday Night Live. The comedian has portrayed the former congressman on the long-running show in the past.
After the news broke about Santos’ early release from prison, the series’ audience was wondering when or if Yang would bring back his version of the politician. Many were hoping that he would reprise the role during that week’s episode. However, the Saturday Night Live cast member was in Los Angeles and unavailable that week.
To many fans’ delight, SNL’s version of Santos showed up this week. Yang joined Michael Che and Colin Jost during their Weekend Update segment. Walking onto the set smugly, he announced his release from prison before he flooded the broadcast with lies. He claimed to win a marathon that hadn’t even happened yet, as well as stealing a piece of jewelry from the Louvre and saying that he was only taking it back because it originally belonged to him.
Yang proceeded to call all the “friends” he made while he was incarcerated, such as Sean “Diddy” Combs. All the while, Jost was sitting next to him, calling out his lies while attempting but failing to hold back his laughter at his colleague’s brutal impression of Santos.
Despite many of Saturday Night Live’s viewers loving the sketch and finding it hilarious, it also received a decent amount of backlash. Many took to social media and aired their grievances with Yang’s impression. X users commented on SNL’s post of the clip, calling the portrayal “painfully unfunny” and criticizing the show’s “cast of woke [millennials].”
Along with roasting Santos, the Weekend Update also addressed several other political events. Che briefly spoke about the SNAP cutoff that he called out on his Instagram page just hours before the broadcast. Jost also made fun of President Donald Trump’s visit to Japan and White House renovations.
Saturday Night Live airs new episodes on Saturday at 11:30 PM ET and 8:30 PM PT on NBC.
