It’s been over a year and a half since I last set virtual foot on my Animal Crossing: New Horizons island. Not because I stopped loving the game, but because I needed to take a break. After a string of setbacks that caused me some very real grief, what was once my escape started to feel heavy instead of cozy.
When ACNH launched, it was a daily ritual and a comforting space for me. However, sad memories of playing daily with someone who I loved but who is no longer in my life, combined with an unfortunate situation where I lost my entire island that I had played daily for years, left me feeling empty. I did try restarting my ACNH island once, but it wasn’t the same.
But now, with the 3.0 update coming this January, I feel that familiar pull to check in again and start rebuilding both my island and the joy I once felt through it.
January’s ACNH 3.0 Update Is The Perfect Reason To Return
There Is So Much New To See And Do, And Brings Back So Much Hype
Perhaps that break from the game was what I needed to heal from some of the loss I felt. I had decided that, despite my longtime love of the Animal Crossing series, I would likely not play again until the next game releases.
Then, a few days ago, I saw the trailer for ACNH‘s 3.0 update, and I couldn’t keep myself from loading up the game once again, to start fresh with a new space and prepare for the update. Seeing quality-of-life changes like bulk crafting and the graphical upgrades with the Nintendo Switch 2 edition is exciting, but it was seeing my favorite Kapp’n and his family running a resort hotel that hooked me.
This is much more than just a simple little update, but rather a massive content drop to the game, for free. Though I do worry about what this means for how long the wait will be for the next Animal Crossing game, just seeing that short 12-minute trailer was already more than enough to get me hyped to explore a new “Deserted Island Getaway Package” with Timmy and Tommy.
Even though I hadn’t been playing ACNH, I’ve loved seeing how much the community of fans have continued to love this cozy world. Some of my favorite streamers, including Nintentalk, who infamously started many of the ACNH challenges as well as his co-hosts on the Slow Burn: A Cozy Game Podcast and many others, have all regularly been posting content about the game.
There are so many incredible dream addresses shared, island design trends, and more that have helped to keep players regularly checking on their villagers, even now that the game is coming up on six years. Despite not playing, I loved seeing the content fans were putting out, and seeing that quiet magic that ACNH provides.
Coming back to Animal Crossing: New Horizons after so long feels like a reminder that it’s okay to start over, both in the game and in life. This 3.0 update certainly won’t be perfect, as nothing ever is, but I am grateful for the spark of joy and excitement it is giving me and so many others. I’m not rebuilding what I lost, but I’m starting over and letting the joy back in.
